Prince George, B.C. – Officials with Prince George Fire/Rescue say the clean-up of the chemical that spilled when a flatbed tractor-trailer went off the Old Cariboo Highway Friday morning will take most of the weekend.
The synthetic polymer used as an adhesive in plywood and OSB production was contained in one of two large sacks on the truck that fell into the ditch and burst about 1.5 kilometres south of Giscome Road. The thick syrupy-type material is considered corrosive, but the Environment Ministry said it posed no immediate public safety issue.
The Old Cariboo Highway has been re-opened to single-lane traffic at the site. Prince George Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief John Iverson says contractors are expected to be on site over the weekend clearing the spilled product and removing the damaged vehicle. He says all necessary precautions have been taken and there is no risk to either the public or the environment.
