Family Continues Searching For Brett Smith

Prince George, B.C. – The official search for a Prince George man missing south of Burns Lake has been called off, but family and friends are continuing their efforts to find Brett Smith.

North District RCMP spokesperson Cst. Lesley Smith says the official search of Takysie Lake and the surrounding area was called off by police and Search and Rescue on Monday, August 12th. Four days earlier family contacted the Takysie Lake resort where Smith was staying while working in the area. Family members were concerned because they hadn’t heard from him since August 6th. Owners of the resort found a boat used by Smith abandoned on the north shore of the lake. The boat contained Smith’s belongings and a PFD, but there has been no sign of him.

The 5-day search involved Search and Rescue personnel from Burns Lake, Nechako Valley, Houston, Bulkley Valley, Fort St. James, Prince George and Terrace. A side sonar unit was also utilized, as were Police Dog Services in the ground search and a PEP helicopter in the aerial search.

Burns Lake RCMP have confirmed that there were no witnesses to Brett Smith entering the water, so the ground search was extended. However that part of the effort has turned up nothing to this point.

Family members would like to hear from anyone who may have information as to Smith’s whereabouts. And, anyone interested in helping the family with their search is asked to call the Burns Lake RCMP at 250-692-7171.
