MP Welcomes Riding Name Change

Wednesday, August 21, 2013 @ 3:11 PM

Prinice George, B.C. –  When the next Federal Election is  called,  the  riding of Prince George- Peace River will  have a new name.

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission final report  for B.C. was tabled in the House of Commons today.

Prince George-Peace River MP, Bob Zimmer,  is pleased to see the Commission has  agreed with his recommendation  that the name of the new electoral district of Prince George-Peace River be changed to Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies.

“It is rewarding to know that the Commission has decided to agree with my recommendation to change the name of our very large riding,” said Mr. Zimmer. “I strongly believe that including Northern Rockies in the new electoral district’s name will better represent the people and communities that live within these boundaries. I am especially happy for Mayor Streeper and the people of Fort Nelson and the Northern Rockies ‎Regional District.”

The Chief Electoral Officer will use this report when drafting the representation order, which is expected to be proclaimed in the fall. The new name would come into force on the day Parliament is dissolved for the first general election taking place seven months after the representation order is proclaimed.

That’s it? Just add Northern Rockies? Our tax dollars are hard at work I see!

and this fiasco cost us how much ?

I love this stuff. It reminds me of when they changed the “Ottawa River Parkway” to the “Sir John A Macdonald Parkway”, along with an estimated cost of $60,000 to change the signs over.

For those that haven’t been here, this stretch of road runs right beside the Ottawa River and the former name was perfectly logical.

But hey, it’s only money right?

Oh by the way, is there going to be an “Eastern Rockies” or “Southeastern Rockies” riding? Where exactly do the “Northern Rockies” begin?

Another waste of tax payers money just so Zimmer can say “look what I did”

It’s amazing that Harper lets him speak to media.

I would say that to this point in time, that name change is about all Zimmer has done. If he doesn’t get moving he will soon be in contention with Harris, for doing very little over a long period of time.

Have a nice day.

Conservative: 1 preservative 2 opposed to innovations or change, desirous of maintaining established conditions and institutions 3 moderate and prudent….. If it said “disappears for 3 out of 4 years” that would be a BC Liberal LOL…

Now people take a look at a map. There is Prince George, the city not the kid, would not want to confuse you. Know see the Peace River area. Now see the mountains seems rather distinct from the Peace River area to me. I have been up in those areas and the new wording is more descriptive of the riding.

I suppose if some liberal with pretty boys blessing had made the name change you would all be applauding and bitching that Zimmer and Harper did not make the change.

Here is the map, like I said much better description.

Approximately one year ago Zimmer sent out perhaps his only constituent newsletter which included a survey about the Northern Gateway pipeline. He has never made the results of this survey public. Zimmer is without a doubt one of Harper’s best trained seals. I do not see how changing the name of this riding will change anything about the representation that Zimmer now provides which is essentially minimal. I guess it was an easy way for him to get his name in the news.

So, based on that logic regarding naming by regional district, the electoral area of Skeena – Bulkley Valley should be:
Kitimat – Stikine – Central Coast – Bulkley – Nechako – Haida Gwai.

Also time to add Central Coast to Cariboo-Prince George.

It would have been more reasonable and simpler if the three had been renamed something like:

North Eastern BC, North Western BC, and Central BC.

I mean why does Kamloops Thompson Cariboo have Cariboo in it while Cariboo Prince George does not have Nechako in it even though the regional district is divided.

Time to revisit all electoral names in Canada?

Maybe be could revisit the name of the province while we are at it. Many people in the world probably think British Columbia is a country next to Spanish Colombia. ;-)

Good call on this one. I think it better represents who this riding represents and its good to be reminded of that. If people don’t like all the regions it encompasses than maybe they could argue for smaller riding’s in rural Canada.
