Regarding Syria and its use of chemical weapons on civilians:
In April of 1915 Canada and the Western nations were first attacked with chemical weapons in the battle of Ypres. The Canadian 1st division lost a third of its force plugging the holes vacated in the line by the French fleeing from 168-tons of chlorine gas. Canada had 6000 casualties over two days, the British had 53,000 casualties (the core of their professional army died within minutes) and the French 10,000. Germany had 35,000 casualties despite having the element of surprise they were not able to break through the Canadian line. The scenes from this battlefield led to the writing of Flanders Field a focal point of our Remembrance Day.
On April 24th 1915 Canada became a strong advocate against the use of chemical weapons. Some would say the battle of Vimy Ridge two years later in April 1917 was Canadaâs revenge for what happened at Ypres. Of the 100,000 Canadians that fought in that battle one in ten were casualties, but the German 6th army was essentially vanquished with only 4000 taken as prisoners of war and the rest left on the battle field. At the time of Vimy Ridge Canada didnât take a back seat to America who had yet to enter the war, rather Canada took the lead in taking down what was considered the worlds strongest army and user of chemical weapons at its strongest position. The Germans didnât even consider using chemical weapons on the battlefield in WW2 (only out of sight against defenseless prisoners).
Fast forward to today and we seen the weakness of Obama through his handling of the Egyptian turmoil, how the Egyptian military essentially ignored Obama. Obama is so weak he canât even put his own policy to a vote in the American Congress on how to respond to a chemical weapons attack on a civilian population. Then we have the Harper government who rather than lead, instead prorogued parliament, and can only say they will follow what ever Obama proposes⦠essentially bombing and destabilizing the Assad regime, while hoping they donât widen the war or allow Sunni extremists to take over Syria. If this is the start of WW3, then what are the Canadian principles, and why arenât we front and center with a Canadian position⦠for example what could Canada do towards a political solution? The Americans and Canada are both signatories to international law outlawing the use of chemical weapons, and so something has to be done to make that mean something⦠and it shouldnât be held hostage to Russian and Chinese vetoâs at the UN. .. but just sending a few missiles into a hornets nest just isnât a convincing response.
Some would say the Americans should cut foreign aid to Egypt for the events of the last few weeks, others would say this would be made up for by the Saudiâs, and only serve to push Egypt into the arms of Russia essentially ending the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Israel backed the Egyptian military to save the 1979 Camp David peace treaty. Ironically Morsi supported Egyptian intervention in Syria on the side of the Sunni rebels that are backed by Israel and the West, and the Egyptian military sides with the baathists party in Syria who are one step from war with the West and Israel.
Prior to the Assad regime in Syria there was a short lived anti communist union with Egypt called the United Arab Republic (1958-1961). The two countries along with later Iraq (1963 revival of the UAR) all shared the same Arab liberation flag of the Egyptian revolution (1952) horizontal red, white, and black bands⦠with the two stars on the Syrian flag representing Egypt and Syria as founding members of the UAR⦠the Iraq flag to this day has three stars hoping they would one day be the third part to the UAR. Egypt continued to call itself the UAR as its sole member until 1971. At one point the baathist party in Syria and Iraq were at one with the Egyptian military⦠all had as a component of their governments Christians and the protection of Christian churches. General al-Sisi of Egypt has gone as far as committing the state to rebuild all the Coptic churches that were burnt down by the Muslim brotherhood during the recent protests.
The idea of the United Arab Republic was that it was a commonwealth of sorts that was transcendent secular rule over the many religious and tribal minorities. Whether Alawite, Druze, Christian, Coptic, Jewish, Sunni, Kurdish, or Shia their unity ensured their fair treatment. The religious strife we see today in these countries is in part a result of divide and conquer policies by religious extremism, and with the level now raised to chemical attacks on civilians there will never be trust again in Syria to have one group rule over the other for a long long time if ever.
Just plain bombing Syria to punish them for using chemical weapons is a dangerous move that could easily see the war widen and the atrocities accelerated. One canât target the chemical weapons or we could see an environmental calamity, and if one removes the Assad regime the country and its vast arsenal of chemical weapons could fall into the hands of Sunni extremists. Obviously any plan should involve a long term objective that involves a smooth transition of power to a responsible government that would enable the removal or destruction of those weapons.
I would propose the revival of the United Arab Republic under the leadership of General al-Sisi of Egypt as the devil we know option. The Syrian Baathist party could potentially be persuaded to dump Assad and resume the UAR Baathist pan-Arab political philosophy⦠the Syrian military could stay intact under new leadership from Egypt and the Egyptian component could guarantee the security of Syriaâs minority Christians, Kurds, and Aliwites while empowering the long oppressed Sunni population. The Sunni extremists of the Muslim brotherhood would then have something to celebrate in their unity with their brothers who have been fighting in Syria against the regime⦠Syria could potentially be broken into three equal states within the UAR⦠with the Aliwite dominated state, Kurdish, as well as the Sunni dominated states⦠if Iraq becomes a failed state it to could be broken down into three states based on ethnicity as equal members of a UAR commonwealth.
The idea of a UAR sure beats NATO fighting in the Middle East and is probably the only way at this point to stop the inter ethnic and tribal/religious violence that is bubbling over and threatening world stability. The national strengths would be a win win for all involved and would spur economic prosperity for all involved⦠and eventually through the strength of diversity could negotiate a lasting peace between their Arab brothers in Palestine and the state of Israel.
For this to work it would need an opportunity like the impending NATO assault on Syria to put the run on Assad, while holding out that hand of partnership with Egypt and the potential for a UAR. For Egypt it could be what is needed to lift it out of the economic hole its in, would stabilise its global image, and would likely require more support from the outside world to help it through its incubation of democracy and an inclusive constitution. While remaking Egypt into a modern civil society they could incorporate these same changes simultaneously throughout the hypothetical UAR.
As of today Syria has no where to run, we donât need to bomb them before our democracies have had a chance to properly debate our objectives and vote on it in our parliaments. Because chemical weapons use is banned by international law this could be done as a policing mission, and shouldnât require the approval of the Security council veto members, but it must require the approval of the democratic process in participating nations. How this is handled will be setting the standard for use of force when the threat is not eminent, but is rather the result of a moral outrage and violation of international law.
I believe strong leadership with a good plan would get the votes if the representatives of democracy had their vote. In Britain, the use of force was voted down because the government of David Cameron was asking for an open ended commitment to war, with no clear objective, and the request was premature considering UN inspectors were still on the ground in Syria and have not yet reported. This was a serious crime, it was heinous that someone would ever use saran gas to kill indiscriminate humans, even children. What if those chemical weapons, once part of regular war, were to find their way into the hands of the extremists? Ultimately the respective legislatures in the worlds democracies should have the opportunity to stand up and be counted either for or against an action that could represent humanity in the 21st century, or could alternatively go sideways into WW3 if bungled by ham fisted policy lacking oversight from our elected representatives.
Itâs a fascinating turning point in history. I look forward to the Canadian parliament being recalled before Canada makes any commitments. I think it would be good for our democracy, because it is an issue that could get bi-partisan support with a little bit of leadership. For Canada maybe its not a military mission, but rather a follow up enabling political mission that looks to fill the void of an Assad rigime⦠maybe a UAR idea, or maybe just safe zones, and hopefully something that leads to a removal of the chemical weapons threat.
I think this will be a week that will define the leadership abilities of the politicians of our time. Which politicians support the democratic values and where their priorities lay? It will also determine the acceptability of chemical weapons in future conflicts.
Time Will Tell
I would also like to know when the province will do the road lines on the highway between Fort Fraser and Fraser Lake. Its probably the only highway in BC with no white line, and no center line. It looks like its never been painted. A good time to do it would be before winter.
Enjoy the holiday weekend everyone.
The problem Obama is facing is Bush didn’t find any WOMD! Non, zero, zippo! So did Syria use chemical weapons or are they telling us they did so they have their reason to go flatten them!
Just stick to the right eagleone like we have to do all winter because we can’t see the centrelines.

WHERE ?
I would like to know when we are going to have enough Doctors in PG to go around. I really irritates me, that I have to go to the walk-in clinic when I’m ill because I can’t get in to see my own Doctor for at a week or more. I don’t have any ailments that need constant care but when I’m sick I need to see a Doctor now not 2 weeks from now. When I do get an appointment I have to take at least a half day off work because its such a long wait. In the past I have waited up to and over and hour in the waiting room and then another half hour at least in the exam room, only to have the Doc do a fly by. It really ticks me that I can’t even have the time alloted for my appointment because he is so overbooked, which also makes me wonder just how accurate his diagnosis is. I can’t even get another Doctor as there are are only a few taking patients, of coarse they won’t take me because I “have” one. I realize they are busy but does that mean that the caring stops as well? Just saying. Have a great weekend everyone!
BCR
I’m still waiting to hear the whole story about the cop and atv on the hart.
“I would also like to know when the province will do the road lines on the highway between Fort Fraser and Fraser Lake.”
We were through there about a week ago and they had dumped gravel on it to seal coat it I am assuming as we had a pilot car escorting people through to keep the dust down
Have you ever had trouble getting an appointment with your Dr.? So, you go to the walk-in clinic and find him working there!
The only reason gas prices go down is because they are preparing us for an increase. Winters coming.
It was all right for the United States to use napalm in Vietnam, cremating untold numbers of civilians.
It was fine to stand by as Iraq used American-supplied poison gas against Iran in their war.
It was fine that the US used white phosphorus in an attack causing horrific suffering among civilians.
Now Obama arises in high dudgeon when someone, and they don’t know who, used poison gas in Syria. With this as a rationale, the US plans to violate the UN Charter and engage in the ultimate war crime… the unprovoked attack on another member nation.
Here we go again. Will Canada be complicit in this war crime? Stay tuned.
I’m still waiting to hear the whole story about the cop and atv on the hart.
Long term, gas prices are going up. Get used to it.
Syria will be blamed for the next increase in gas prices, even though we don’t get our oil from that region and the east gets its oil mostly from Norway and by rail
Kamloops consistently pays 10 cents a liter less than us because they have a refinery, sure wish we had one
On another topic, can anyone tell me how Canada Post continues to operate? It seems their primary reason for existence nowadays is to deliver junk mail that nobody reads.
Sorry people, I was misinformed. Gas is still at $1.35
slinky: “Kamloops consistently pays 10 cents a liter less than us because they have a refinery”
Gas prices are set upon what the market will bear, refinery or no refinery. End of story.
Yes Steward that has happened..grrrr
slinky:
“Kamloops consistently pays 10 cents a liter less than us because they have a refinery, sure wish we had one”
We do have a refinery. Husky refinery is right across from Intercon pulpmill on Prince George Pulpmill rd.
Man cuaght with hundred some guns and thousands of rounds of ammo, he had permits for them,it was on the news, what is wrong with that, when he has permits? What is the story?
Got my chuckle for the week AND I got to roll my eyes too. Lucky me. Just got back from going on CBC.ca and saw this article about this lady letting her kid whiz in the trash receptacle at a mall directly across the river south of Vancouver. Further emboldening stereotyping.
In Pine Centre Mall every one goes of the deep end when someone feeds a kid via a hooter, so I suppose some people can go off the deep end when the eventual opposite occurs in a lower mainland mall. Most amusing.
Snappi, re your complaint about doctors, the situation is not going to get any better unless the government(s) hand over more money for training doctors. In turn, there will have to be spaces made available at the universities and hospitals and staff available to help train them. Every doctor I know, does more than his share of hours worked to meet the demands of his patients and the community, and often donates additonal time to help train the new ones. Next time you have to wait for your doctor, you might want to consider the fact that he/she could have been up all night at the hospital with a sick or dying patient, or consulting with specialists about a sick child. Things could be a lot worse – you could live in the US and have to pay for your medical needs! Have a great day!
Hey Eagleone. 14 paragraphs ? On chemical weapons? Really ? Get your own website, your long windedness is exhausting, and really has no relavance to Prince George
The other day a Telus operator asked me for either my passport number, carecard number, or SIN number when I was looking at opening an account with them. They already had my name, phone number, email address, home address and birthday date. When the operator said that they had to have one of the numbers after I said that it was illegal for them to even ask for them I said the conversation was ending and I ended the call. When I told a young person they told me that of course they needed the numbers. Am I just getting too old as since when are your private numbers open to public companies.
June 2013 gasoline prices per litre, including taxes (Canadian dollars:
USA 0.99
Canada 1.32
Japan 1.56
Spain 1.95
France 2.09
U.K. 2.15
Germany 2.18
Italy 2.36
Still cheap enough here to keep driving gas guzzlers – without too much complaining.
Graymare – I have never had to give out that information when opening an account anywhere other than a bank, and I think even then they only ask for SIN and it’s optional. It’s just quicker for a credit check if you supply it. I guess I would be considered a young person and I would have done the same thing as you in that situation.
An MP from Ottawa a long time ago said that if you are asked for your S.I.N. just give them any nine numbers. It is just a number used by the government for your taxes, pension and E.I. It is NOT a “national identity number”. Someone who gets that number and your name is headed for a new life with your name and info. Beware!
Here is something you might not see on MSM, early freeze traps 22 vessels in the Northwest Passage. Hey I thought is was ice free.
http://www.sail-world.com/Canada/North-West-Passage-blocked-with-iceâyachts-caught/113788
What is funny is this paragraph getting a dig at Harper as if he is responsible for this people
Since one of the Canadian Coast Guardâs prime missions is to provide icebreaking for commercial shipping it will be interesting to see if Canada Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Government views this as an opportunity for good public relations to help recreational yachts transiting the Northwest Passage.
ICBC ????? Get rid of some of the top guys and bring our rates back down..
Heyyy Anybody have extra tickets or coupons to Barkerville that they won’t use this weekend??Thanks
Here is some information you won’t here from Suzuki, Weaver and other warming scammers
In 2009 the cold weather in Peru killed 250 children. 2009 was a bad year in Peru. Imagine if these same children had died in a heatwave.
â¦.this yearâs cold season began in March rather than June.
The extreme cold has brought snow, hail, freezing temperatures and strong winds, and has killed more children than recorded annually for the past four yearsâ¦..

In regards to PG getting more doctors…
When I was working in PG I called my employer to let them know I was sick and would not be back to work. After a few days off I returned to work where I was promptly told that I would be required to get a doctors note confirming that I was sick or I would face disciplinary action. I rarely missed any work so this came as a surprise to me. So I called my doctor and took the first available appt. 8 FULL days AFTER I called.
In 8 days I attended my doctorâs office and told him why I was there, that my employer is demanding that he confirm I was sick.
My doctor replied “I can’t do that”… it’s been too long now.” So instead he wrote the following note to my employer.
“This patient was unable to work because THE PATIENT SAYS he was sick at the time.”
When I gave it to my supervisor he balked at it and said this doesn’t confirm anything. “Yes it does I replied… it confirms that employers like you are clogging up doctors offices with mundane demands and… let’s also not forget that our medical system had to pay for my stupid visit that YOU demanded.” He responded by saying “Well we need more doctors here then” to which I shot back… “No we don’t, we need to stop these unnecessary doctor visits from taking up office time and causing an increase in costs to our medical system.”
Eagleone I liked your overview. What to do, which devil to support. Right know for Syria Assad, and Egypt the military, some choices but at least they are trying to keep radical Islam at bay. That is the real problem. Harper is just taking a wait and see approach about all one can do with anything middle east. Trudeau what are your thoughts, hello Justin, anyone home.
I know very simplistic view on a very complicated area of the world. Is it simplistic though when looking at the threat of radical Islam.
Vikingnuck you are kidding I hope, If that area blows up you will be rethinking. This gas attach is nothing compared to when, and I say when the radicals get their hands on nukes.
There is no shortagef Dr’s.They have better plases ro work then PG. They get trained at this wonderfull Univercity Hospital in Pg and then head for a better climate and cleaner air.
Lots of Doctors in Abbotsford.
Cheers
In PG a Northern Health Cheap bus leaves regularly. Cheaper than bringing the mountain to Mohammed,eh?
I would like to see more people leave PG for Abbotsford. I’ll hold the door for ya.
There may be a lot of doctors in Abbotsford but by the looks of it they are in dire need of English teachers.

Lots of Doctors in abbotsford.
And they are kept busy with all the shooting and hit and runs there.
Cheers
Eagleone, please try to be more concise. That is way too much to read.
Kudos to the person who lives on 15th Avenue with the lovely garden. Thank you for making that piece of roadway better to drive. You have a serious talent for gardening.
Dear City Hall,
instead of putting in a sidewalk on Carney Street where it turns into 1st Avenue, couldn’t you have looked at putting a sidewalk from the Mohawk on the Hart Highway to the John Hart bridge. More expensive, I know, but would better the residents on the Hart to no end.

Tell us how great the air quality is in Abbotsford and the rest of the valley.
Cheers
Today I did a few things that made my day a little better.
Helped a lady load some wood in her truck at Home Depot, moved a cart at Walmart so a older gentleman could park nice and close in the rain and gave a mom a loonie so her little girl could ride the pirate ship in pine centre. ( rare I have coins these days)
Didn’t take much effort or time but felt good to do.
Have a great Friday all 8)
Oil refinery in Kamloops ?
The Gulf Canada Ltd refinery in Kamloops closed in 1983.
Re: Doctors
1st of all we certainly do pay for our Doctors. This is not a free service. Goverment funded services are far from free.
As for the Doctors shortage. Sure there could be more doctors, but that is only a small piece of the puzzle. Many people visit doctors when not necessary. If these visits were to stop there would be more doctors time to go around.
At the same time, I have never had to wait more that 2-3 days to get an appointment with my doctor. Maybe it is time for a change. And please don’t say no doctors are taking new patients. Throuhg my work I regularily hear of people getting connected to new physicians.
Chevy2000 the ATV was in the wrong. End of story.
NoWay, not according to some of the posts on the PG Citizen website, sounds like the guy who was injured has grounds to sue, and win!
But of course you already knew that didn’t you?
with regard to bc bob’s question about the guy who had a lot of legally acquired weapons, the RCMP claim to have evidence that he was selling weapons to people without acquisition licenses. That is the basis for the seizure and charges.

Can’t you find an Abbotsford news forum to spill your never ending negativity on? Just gotta crap on the old hometown news site for something to make your life worthwhile or do you just indiscriminately crap on everything? I’m sure Abbotsford is overjoyed to have such a sunny new citizen.
Not legal for the Atv to be on the road in the first place.
Abbotsford dosent know that I’m here and there is nothing sunny about it,its a great place to live.
=====================================
And they are kept busy with all the shooting and hit and runs there.
Talk about shootings and hit and run accidents, dont forget that PG is still #4 when it comes to crime.

Tell us how great the air quality is in Abbotsford and the rest of the valley.
What a dumb statement. I guess you wouldnt be able to find the BC Air Quality site on the internet
Cheers
I went through an automatic car wash in town. I had to pay by credit card at the entrance of the wash bay. The car wash was terrible, leaving a vertical tiger stripe appearance on the black paint. At least that’s how the manager described it. Clean stripe, dirty stripe, clean stripe, dirty stripe and so on and so on. I asked for my money back and he responded that they don’t do that! Really?? I spoke to the business owner and his response was basically “too bad, so sad” Guess I got stuck paying for a real crappy job. I won’t ever go to that business again. The owner said that he doesn’t care because my lack of business won’t affect his bottom line. I must say that I’ve never, ever seen such poor service by any business, anywhere! Hope the rest of you don’t waste your money!!
eagleone, the gas attacks where mossad agents. your slipping. Its all a Zionist conspiracy.
Hey Hart Guy which car wash was that so I can avoid it and also pass the word around.
Eagleone, I think that stretch of highway is slated for Nov 15th, just in time for sanding and plowing. Can’t believe some areas
highway lines don’t get put down sooner.
20th Ave. was forever, still everyone thought they still had two lanes each way.
NOT.
I think retired is bored in his holy land.
b c bob, it’s who he was selling too, with no POL/PAL.
Hartly 2, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to name the business on this site. Don’t want to get Ben and crew in trouble. But then again, maybe they would delete my post before it’s viewable, if in fact they were concerned that I named the business. Can anyone advise if we are allowed to name names??
Hart Guy…
Sadly just because you had a bad experience doesn’t mean that you can name them. It’s a bit of “he said, she said”… They could come back on you and say that you are not describing that incident very accurately.
I would refrain from naming them in an online forum such as this. Instead stick to telling your friends and family about your unpleasant experience.
Cheers..
It’s your opinion Hart Guy, last I checked, everyone is entitled to their opinion without being censored.
We are businesses customers, they should be bending over backwards to serve our needs with a smile. If no one complains about a business’s service how will they know they are providing an inferior product or service? Just my opinion…
