Prince George, B.C. – Summer is quickly winding down and it won’t be long before the leaves on the trees begin turning to create a brilliant patchwork of colour that marks the onset of fall.

However, we’re not quite there yet, and the folks at the Huble Homestead north of town are putting out the welcome mat for Giscome Days, running from 10 am to 4 pm today and Monday.
You can scout out the homestead site and learn about its history, purchase fresh vegetables grown in their garden, shop at the General Store and try some of the multicultural food dishes available. There will also be musical performers on hand plus demonstrations of what life was like over a century ago.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of John Giscome setting foot on what would become known as the Giscome Portage.

It is too bad that this is all that we get for a type of event that would get much more recognition by a community in other parts of this country.

The Huble Homestead people are doing a great job, but I think in this community they are fighting an uphill battle.

This is part of the history of the creation of this City. While comparatively major development occurred about the time of the building of the railroad, there were many who came before, whether First Nations, early explorers, or the HBC. We really have very little to show of that in today’s public spaces.

Sort of like the oldest continuously operating business in B.C. is the McLeod Lake store. There isn’t even a sign up for tourists, indicating that fact.
