Burns Lake, B.C. – One person is dead, two others taken to hospital following a crash on Highway 16 West of Burns Lake today.

RCMP  from Smithers, Burns Lake and Vanderhoof  have attended the scene where an east bound  Jeep Liberty had crossed the centre line of Highway 16 and  collided with an Ace Motor Home near Aspen Road, about 20 kms  west of Burns Lake jest before noon.

The male driver and lone occupant of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the motor home, a man and a woman, have been taken to Burns Lake Hospital with non life threatening injuries.
The highway has been closed in both directions so that forensic experts can identify and document the physical evidence at the scene. Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure are aware and on scene.
A detour has been established around the crash scene for light traffic only. No commercial traffic is allowed on the detour.

The investigation is still in it’s infancy and causal factors have yet to be determined. A Collision Reconstructionist has been called and is enroute to the scene of the crash.
At this time names are being with held pending notification of next of kin.
Police, along with the BC Coroner’s Office continue to investigate and would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this crash, as well as to anyone who may have witnessed the vehicles involved prior to the collision.

We need to tighten up the requirements for getting a driver’s license. Seriously; this is getting out of hand.

Very sad. I was hoping for a fatality free weekend.

Sure would be nice to have a two foot wide center line and some wider shoulders up here in the north… like the standard on the Island.

It wouldn’t be enough to save everyone, but it would be enough to allow some to save themselves.

I would take the wider driving surface over more passing lanes for 90% of Northern BC highways.
