School Year Off to Bumpy Start

Wednesday, September 4, 2013 @ 11:56 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The school year may be underway for School District 57 students, but there have been some hiccups.

Blackburn students had the day off today as a water main had broken and needed to be repaired. It would appear those repairs will be completed and the water back on in time for tomorrow’s classes.

Buckhorn Elementary also ran into a water problem today.   Seems a main line from the community water system broke. It too is being repaired, and is expected to be fixed in time for tomorrow morning’s bell. The   water issue did not prevent students from attending classes this morning.

Over at Lakewood, the parking lot upgrades are not yet complete, and the lot is still gravel. There are some issues about the moving of a play ground area as well.

Blackburn also has some issues with its parking lot upgrades with lighting still needing to be installed and paving to be done. It’s hoped those upgrades will be completed by the end of September.

As for Giscome, the tender has been issued for the new modular units and activity centre. School District 57 Superintendent Brian Pepper says Giscome students   will spend most, if not all, of this school year in the existing portables, and if there are no surprises, the new facilities will be ready for the 2014/15 school year.

I live near Lakewood (Lac des bois). the whole parking lot extension seems bizarre. first off, it was started the last week of July and they easily have another week before it will be ready. why did they wait so long to break ground? they knew when school is going to start back up. last night crews were working until after 9pm.

I also can’t figure out why they ripped up the old parking lot instead of just building an extension. the old parking lot was still in good shape, drained well and had an easy grade. 6 weeks to build a parking lot seems excessive, considering the amount of road work and paving that can be done on the highways in the same amount of time. now parents have to park everywhere but the parking lot, exacerbating the very problem the new parking lot was supposed to solve.

No surprise with Giscome as I believe this may be tied in some way to the possible new construction of the Graymont Limestone plant right next door slated for 2014. i think there more to come with this story.
