Plenty of Drivers Forgot School Zone Rules
Saturday, September 7, 2013 @ 3:55 AM

“We had advised drivers we would be enforcing the Motor Vehicle Act as it applies to School Zones” says Sergeant Al Steinhauser, head of the PG Traffic Services Unit. Still, even though the warning had been issued that there would be zero tolerance for school zone speeders, there were still plenty of drivers who were handed speeding tickets, or cited for failing to yield to pedestrians.
Exact numbers have not yet been tabulated, but Traffic Services officers were busy.
Sgt. Steinhauser says many of the drivers issued tickets, were parents dropping off their kids at school “We know parents can sometimes be in a rush to make sure their children arrive on time and safely at school . The same parents are often then in a hurry to make sure they get themselves to work on time. We ask that everyone slow down and pay attention because we want to make sure every child is safe.”
Next week, the focus will be on distracted driving and seatbelt use. Consider yourself warned.

I was going through van bien school zone this morning and I had 2 vehicles pass me while I was doing the 30k speed limit both vehicles pulled into the parking lot of the school and in both cases the drivers were female and dropping off their kids and one woman was on her cell
Parents are always bitching at drivers disobeying the laws yet they are generally the worst offenders go figure….
Should of pulled in behind her grabbed her phone and threw it on the school roof!
Pg drivers don’t obey regular speed limits so why would they obey something as silly as a school zone?
In the winter time these people are sitting in front of the schools idling their vehicles waiting for their children to get out. Don’t seem to be too concerned about pollution, smoking, talking on the phone, or speeding,. Rather interesting when you consider that they are the Mothers and Fathers of the children that society is trying to protect.
Distracted driving, and changing the drinking rules to .05 from .08 were implemented by the Government to still collect fine money, but to avoid the cost of going to court. These laws are not working.
We need to go back to point .08 and impaired driving, with the automatic 14 day jail sentence after a second conviction for impaired driving. In addition we need to focus on those laws that have been on the books for years. ie; Dangerous Driving, Driving without due care and attention, Speeding, etc;
Its not right that the Government can avoid talking people to court just to save money. These people need to spend some time in court and is some cases (in jail) to reflect on their actions.
We spend billions on useless Highways, but don’t seem to have enough money to properly run our court systems.
BCRacer: get up and leave 5 minutes earlier…
Exactly. Getting to school or work on time is what you could call a regularly scheduled activity, not a last minute whim.
metalman.
People are shocked that there are speeders in school zones in this town? The same people that speed through school zones are the ones who think the speed limit on foothills is 120km/h or that the hart highway is for testing out the max speed of their vehicles.
The headline is misleading; people did not forget. The majority of people behind the wheel are self-centered morons who are too stupid to walk in public let alone drive a killing machine.
We need to make it much more difficult to obtain and keep a driver’s license.
