Suspect Arrested After Carjacking In College Heights

Sunday, September 8, 2013 @ 4:23 AM

Prince George, BC – Prince George RCMP say several charges – including assaulting a police officer and unlawful confinement – are pending against a man in connection with an incident in College Heights yesterday afternoon that culminated with a carjacking in one of the shopping complex parking lots.

Media Liaison Officer, Corporal Craig Douglass, says the incident began when officers entered a retail store on Domano Boulevard just before 3:30pm yesterday, in an attempt to arrest a male employee who was wanted on a theft charge by Vanderhoof RCMP.

Corporal Douglass says the 34-year-old man was place under arrest after providing the officer with a false name.  Police then allege the officer was assaulted while attempting to restrain the suspect, who fled the store on foot into a nearby wooded area.

Douglass says several additional RCMP officers and a Police Dog Service team were called in to assist.  He says the suspect was located by the Police Service Dog at approximately 4pm, but alleges the man attempted to flee police again by running into the parking lot of a nearby shopping complex.

"At this point, the suspect entered the back seat of a slowly moving vehicle and demanded the driver keep driving," says the RCMP’s Media Liaison.  "The vehicle was blocked in by police and the suspect ordered to exit the vehicle.  Still refusing to follow police commands, the suspect was extracted by the Police Service Dog and handler.  Moments later, the suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody."

Corporal Douglass says the suspect was taken to hospital with injuries to his leg consistent with dog bites.  The suspect is in custody awaiting a bail hearing.  Douglass says RCMP will be requesting he be remanded in custody.

Remanded in custody is a good first move.

Are you kidding me? What a bunch of Keystone Kops. I guess he is lucky that after being made to look like fools the RCMP chose to sic the dog on him for a few bites rather than SOP which sees the mandatory tasering.

Let me go out on a limb and wonder aloud if the RCMP member who was “assaulted” was a female?

Complete buffoons the lot of them, and to say otherwise just provides the impetus for this organization to continue to provide a disservice to Canadians.

Just an after-thought: It would have been nice if the dog handler could keep up with the dog and the perp while tracking them, rather than waiting until he has car-jacked someone. But the dog can only run as fast as the guy holding the lead. And since it has been proven time and again that service dogs will attack anybody they encounter while on a chase the cops are left with a bit of a quandary.

They have to keep the dogs on a leash for the publics safety, but the handler can’t keep up. So once they have the guy cornered the call the dog guy up to let constable fido chew on a leg for a minute.

The RCMP leans too heavily on a glorified cattle-prod and poorly socialized attack dogs to achieve even the most mundane arrests. Maybe a rethink on training at the “depot” may be in order.

alexvega- let me guess, you don’t like Cops?

Hey I’m all for cops chasing bad guys but the cop that came through my neighbourhood at mach 2 around a blind curve yesterday, could have easily killed an innocent person.

You would be hard pressed to find a career law-enforcement professional that would be proud of the RCMP’s conduct, on so many levels.

Explain why the RCMP needs a public relations arm? Because the pollyannas in our society need a bit of pablum to help them sleep better at night.

In fact the hook-line-and-sinker mentality of many of those that hang-on every RCMP press release as if it is gospel, has lead to the standards within the propaganda branch to fall.

I would even hazard a guess that some of the familiar faces of the organization are getting anxious and depressed at having to disseminate such utter BS at such regular intervals. It has been taking its toll on those poor individuals.

What is more mentally fatiguing: Hostage negotiations or standing in-front of a bank of TV cameras lying to save higher-ups from facing any scrutiny?

Few facts from the article

1. Legitimate want or warrant from Vanderhoof.

2.Gives false name in attempt to avoid arrest.

3.Assault could mean even a shoulder bump when running away.

4.Inflicts trauma and even terror to someone just out doing their Saturday shopping.

5.Refuses command to exit vehicle.

IMO the police dog had every right to go full dental stick on whatever arm or leg he could get a hold of on this POS.

I just gotta say this—Totally agree with ewitt. The perp got his ‘just desserts’.
So did the dog, for that matter.

Funny – I read it as “dirtbag tries very hard to get away, police successfully apprehend with no civilian injuries”
AV – I bet you are the type to get pulled over, give the officer all kinds of attitude, explain what an a-hole he is etc, and then cannot believe how unfair it is when someone else is let off with a warning hey?

That’s fine. It your low expectations that fuel the incompetence. I would expect the RCMP members to have better cardio than the perp. Is that too much to ask?

They had the guy “under arrest”. He got away and the poorly conditioned and physically assaulted member, who has 40 pounds of body armour and various accoutrements hanging from their person, was unable to give pursuit.

If staging an arrest of a wanted felon is going to unleash a public safety nightmare, wouldn’t proper due-diligence be required before attempt said arrest?

This was a situation they created. Or at the very least, handled in just about the most cavalier way imaginable. Sound familiar?

If certain RCMP members are unable to carry themselves with enough of an air of authority that they are left standing pie-faced at the first sign of conflict, maybe they shouldn’t be allowed to patrol on their own.

Pfft…I say yes-sir and no-sir and laugh how easy it is to stroke their egos and go right on with life.

Agreed ewitt !!

Cudos to the cops on this one. Obviously this loser is willing to do anything to save his own sorry a$$ !!

Too bad he’ll be out on the streets again in no time though.

I bet the next time they go to arrest him they will not be using the same officer, nor will they be alone.

I’m right, they will learn by their mistakes this time around. They wouldn’t want to be careless twice. You can be sure of that.

Can’t wait until some of you call the RCMP and they send some shrinking violet that can’t do anything but realize they aren’t qualified to help on their own.

I’m seeing something conflicting in the story.

“…the incident began when officers entered a retail store … in an attempt to arrest a male employee”

“Police then allege the officer was assaulted”

What was it? One or two officers? The first sentence seems to suggest more than one officer was present to handle the initial arrest.

I’m not knowledgable of RCMP SOPs but I simply cannot imagine one officer being sent in to arrest a man in a public store by themselves, for the simple reason that the perp could get combative.

I doubt that the cops are going to do a high risk take down for a simple theft charge the guy likely would have been out of the police station in short order on a promise to appear instead of facing a bunch of new charges. Yes it will be noted it the files that he is an idiot for any future dealings.

alexvega Nowhere in the article does it say the officer involved was a diminutive female- maybe hit the pause button on the little movie playing in your head of how things went down :)

As for not chasing him into the bush, my guess it that with no immediate danger the proper protocol would mean contain the area and call for back up.

Alexvega…give your head a shake! Have you ever met a member of the canine unit? I have, more than one, and those guys are FIT. You sound like a little boy with a bad attitude. I sure as h@ll hope that dog got himself a big ol cookie! Good job to him and handler!! And the guy they were chasing sounds like he put up a h@ll of a fight to get away. Due to excellent police work he was apprehended and no one got hurt except the loser that was running. That’s a good day!

Funny how the attacks on me become personal when I am simply offering my opinion. It is just this myopic “they are all HEROES” mentality, that has caused this organization to fall to such low expectations…and poor results.

While the dog-service members may be “dreamy” that doesn’t equate to cardio fitness. Maybe some should come along with me and my dog; we ran the greenway yesterday. (18km)

I don’t mind the attacks, I understand all of you really appreciate those of us with a spine that can question the RCMPs tactics, without fearing that it is somehow a sin or unpatriotic.

I sure hope the hundreds of female RCMP members who signed onto a civil suit against their present or past employer, alleging sexual harassment, won’t face a judge with such a groupie crush on the Federal Constabulary.

alexvega seems like such an expert on policing, they should try actually doing the job and see just how easy it is.

Good job, PG RCMP. You got am idiot and potentially dangerous person of the street. And a theft charge, which probably would have had the guy released on conditions that day, turned into a list of more serious charges and a dog bite!

Application turned down or did not make it all the way through training and therefore might have an axe to grind?

Easy to speculate when you don’t have to worry about a little thing called factual information.

You naïve little possum: “factual information” from the mouthpiece of the gendarmerie. haha…too funny. Game-set-match! Thanks for playing along at home.

Sounds like they did not even reimburse you for your Greyhound ticket back from Regina after the force showed you the door.

Not to worry you can always fulfill your law enforcement aspirations ala Paul Blart.

I have to agree with most on here. Alexvega is a classic cop hater with plenty of armchair opinions who wouldn’t last two minutes doing their job.

Good for the RCMP for apprehending the dirtbag. Hope the dog got a good chomp in there.

Hey folks. Stop attacking Alexvega on a personal level. We are all entitled to our opinions and to be honest, although I appreciate the dangers and heroism often not recognized in their police work, there are many a times the RCMP do not protect the public out of arrogance or blatant stupidity. I have witnessed some abominations that should have garnered dismissal from the force but I do understand they too are only human. We have good days and bad days as do other people and no one comes to work with the attitude”I am not going to serve and protect the public today” If everyone was accepting and overly understanding then there would no motivation to perform at 110 %. You as a public need to be critical and demand certain standards that members have to strive to live up to or not enter the force to begin with. Women included! Sex and equality has no place in a demand to protect the public and enforce the law! Public safety is the only mandate!

western: “Hey folks. Stop attacking Alexvega on a personal level.”

Um, alex is also not shy to attack people personally, not that it matters.

A bit of a comment on the fitness of the PG RCMP members… It seems like the older cops are pretty fit, but there are so many young, fat asses! Unbelievable. Most of these guys couldn’t run more than 1/2 a block before cardiac arrest! No wonder there are so many shootings, the cops can’t catch up with a runner any other way!

I spend more time placing my life in danger for the fun of it and would find any physical requirement to attend the depot a cinch. Yesterday I ran more than 20km with my dog,(oh and last weekend I was the only person who completed the entire labour day classic while pushing my baby in a stroller..1:03:00..first lap baby for 8.5 miles and completed it all in just over 2 hours)..today I spent the day practicing my motocross racing at the BCR track.

I would bet that there isn’t ONE RCMP member capable of pulling off any of that.None..bupkiss nada..in fact I will lay down a bet that I can beat any cop in running race while pushing my child in a stroller.

So Johnnybelt feel free to roll off the couch and join me any of my pursuits.Oh and I am 47 years old, and I can still rip up and mx track!

Hey alexvega go live in Kandahar for a bit then tell us how bad our police force is.

….and while I’m typing this I am bench pressing 400 pounds and chewing on a piece of steel….then I am going to find a phone booth to change in…..

I’m doing the same thing, middlefinger, but I didn’t want to brag…

10 am this morning it was an 18km run, by 3:44 it was over 20km….by nightfall it will most likely be the ultra marathon known as the Pinocchio classic.

Can make it from Sears to Target in under 2 minutes while checking that no b00bs are out in the food court.

Alexvega, your posts speak a world of your personality.
Sad.

ewitt..it is a 6km run from my house to the greenway. The greenway is 18km. That would make 24kms. Oh and nancy what about my racing all 17 miles of the LDC classic while pushing a stroller? No snide comments? Look it up.

The best thing about being so darn active is I can call any of you out knowing full well you ain’t. I run from malaspina up to unbc and down to 15th and foothills and back 4-5 times a week. With my dog or with the stroller. Feel free to tag along. I practice Motocross several times a week at the BCR track by Coyote Transport, feel free to come on out. That would be FORTY-Seven years old. Oh and we would be doing 4:30 kms if you are scoring at home.

Stroller eh, the only difference between that and the buggies the old folks use to get around the retirement home is the poo factory in your walker. Try it without the mechanic aids next year.

My own theory on Cops..too lazy to work and to stOOpid too steal…ACSC!!

More ‘wisdom’ from the mind of zybldeldkjlu.
