Prince George- A 44 year old man who attempted to pass through security at the Prince George Airport  with two replica grenades , that actually were tobacco grinders, in his hand held luggage , forced the closing of the airport from 8:20 until 9.00am  this morning.

He was questioned by police who say he was cooperative. He was released by police and allowed to continue on his travel.

There were some delays in departures from the airport of between 10 to 30 minutes and  one Air Canada flight  was cancelled.

Commercial airlines who were flying into the airport were given the option of whether to land or wait on the runway.

More likely wackey tobacky grinders.

They were decribed on the radio news as ‘marijuana grinders’.

Seized?! They should have been returned with a “passed security as harmless” tag. Theft pure and simple. Better unpack those water guns folks.

All this proves is that the security measures we have in place actually works as designed. Now return the poor man’s novelty items. Geez!

The guys a idiot, what was he thinking. I guess not!

I don’t feel sorry for buddy at all. I do feel sorry for the folks who had their flight canceled. It’s just downright idiotic to bring something that looks like a weapon through airport security.

The grinders were for grinding up marijuana buds so the guy was a double idiot

give him back his toy grenades so he can bring the next airport to a standstill?! how about this guy pays out of pocket for the massive inconvenience and missed connections everyone else in the airport was forced to experience. I mean, who in their right mind would even consider bringing a toy gun lighter or bomb shaped alarm clock onto an airplane in 2013? if you even say the word bomb or grenade security would have you in a small windowless room for a couple hours. this guy is the poster child for why not to decriminalize marijuana.

Wow he is going to get a hefty bill! You can’t even take a box of juice on the plane so this guy is an absolute idiot for being so clueless!

Great, now I can’t get that Bruno Mars song; “Catch a Grenade for You” out of my mind!!!

But on a positive note p1 that would mean there is at least something in there for a change.

Well lonesome, it is obvious I am inside your head. Out of all the news stories and comments on this site you pick mine to comment on… did you dream about me last night as well?

Here’s what good ol fashioned common sense does. As soon as you arrive in the terminal, you walk over to the commissionaires desk, tell them what you have, they will examine the item, and decide if it goes in your checked luggage, or carry on. Or phone the airline ahead of time. Or, good judgement would dictate mailing them ahead, but don’t know if Canada post is ex raying packages or not.
Now, this person has inconvenienced a whole lot of people, raised some stress levels no doubt. What’s 20 minutes worth in security evacuating due to the foolishness of one person? I’d send this person a bill for a few thousand dollars, he won’t do it again.

This is just dense. What was the need for the time wasting???? I long did it take for somebody to rule these safe? If the seniors in the white shirts can spot a dud, why can’t the airport employees? Why kick in a protocol when everyone who lays eyes on these can clearly tell they are a novelty item.

This is procedure runamok. So was it a bomb expert who ruled the all clear, or just the first person not afflicted with paranoid delusions of grandeur.

But we must see the protocol through until its prescribed conclusion, no-matter how absurd or ridiculous.

Meanwhile 3D printers can get a handgun past any screener… So why are we doing this again?

You’re exactly right alex that guy was dense for trying to take his toy grenades on the plane.

So what if they weren’t toys Alex? Who would be the dumb one now? If I was in security and seen that on my screen I would definitely freak out! You want to open that bag Alex? To see if thery are fake? Not for the pittance they pay those people. Good thing they had someone to talk to because if they were found unattended we would still be waiting for the bomb squad to arrive from Vancouver.

Don’t let facts get in the way of your post. First, the workers are unionized employees with benefits. They are overpaid for how much they are trained obviously. They are miniatures. Do you understand that? There is no pin or mechanism for the spoon to even move let alone come off. Get a grip..I mean come on! Bags are NOT allowed to travel unaccompanied on ANY flight.

Stay frightened, it is what all the relinquishing liberty is all about. If you are going to surrender your ability to think critically at least choose people who are worth trusting.

And you can tell that from an X-ray screen Alex? Maybe you should get a job there since you seem to be an expert. And why aren’t unaccompanied bags allowed on any flight Alex? And what is that full body scan system for?

It’s all for the crack pots out there Alex, maybe/hopefully one will never get through the PG security because the people there are doing their so called overpaid jobs.

It’s called following the rules Alex. He could of drove to Vancouver with his little toys and saved himself and everyone else the trouble.

Or took the bus, no screening of luggage and carry ons for the bus unless they changed things after the incident

With today being the 12th anniversary of the attack on the world trade centers it would only stand to reason that the screeners would be extra cautious in the days leading up to Sept 11. Agree with NoWay that it would be virtually impossible to tell real from fake by the x-ray image.

If the guy was a wing nut of some sort and had managed to get through security with the real thing he could land at VCR and hang around in the secure departure area till today and get on another plane without having to go though a security checkpoint for domestic flights.

Job well done to the PG airport, always wondered if the person watching the screen would see an item as they seem to get a far away look in their eyes as all the bags go through. Kudos to them!

alex vega, i’m not sure why the fact the flight security people are unionized has anything to do with what happened? if they were private sector employees you believe the airport wouldn’t have been evacuated? and that’s good? you sound like a paranoid nra-type, ‘government wants to take away our liberties because we can’t carry fake grenades/guns/box cutters onto planes anymore’ kind of guy.

these people are trained NOT to take any kind of chance when they find something suspcious. you must be a demolitions expert, right? like it or not, security is usually not the arena for critical thought. it’s making a quick decision based on what’s in front of you. good job from security, stupid, moronic decision by the stoner who thought it would be ok.

I am sorry to hear that some would “freak out” if they saw these or similar items somewhere. That’s what happens when you are barraged daily by media stories invoking fear. We don’t need to fear these items, novelty or otherwise. The public simply needs to be educated about what is and isn’t an operational weapon. It would also help if the journalists also were educated on the facts of the stories they report. I’m going to go out on a limb and venture a guess that the airport employee didn’t “freak out”. Procedure was followed. Over zealous protocols perhaps because you can clearly see from this picture the items are NOT a grenade. Common sense at frontline security personnel was set aside. Why? Perhaps the policy is worded in such a way that even if confirmed by frontline staff items are safe, it still must shut down their facility. Procedures set by the airport are not the passenger’s fault. In other cases, items such as these were simply transferred to cargo, mailed to home address or allowed to pass. Really communication goes a long way. It’s perfectly understandable why people have knee-jerk reactions to such things, however, it is not reasonable given the amount of access to education one has at their fingertips. Sense and reason folks. The security team did their job and do it everyday. In this case it is my observational opinion that the airport overreacted when they shut it down over a novelty item.
