Prince George, B.C. – Participants from around the Prince George area will be gathering at the Terry Fox statue at 7th and Dominion this morning for the 33rd Terry Fox Run.
The annual run, which began in September, 1981, celebrates Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope in 1980 to raise money for
cancer research. Terry had hoped to run across the entire country, from coast to coast, but had to halt his effort in Thunder Bay, Ontario when his own cancer spread. He died on June 28th, 1981 but the Marathon was taken up in his name that September and has continued to grow ever since. To date, more than $600 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research.

That total will be added to this year as people around the world join in the common cause of raising the money that will enable the research leading to the discovery of a cure for the insidious disease. The usual turnout of participants for the Prince George Terry Fox Run is around 450, but organizers hope to top the 500 mark this year.
The run, or walk, covers a 5-kilometre route starting at the Community Foundation Park, site of the Terry Fox statue. Registration gets underway at 9 am, with the run beginning at 10 and concluding at noon.
