Prince George, B.C. – Bravo Company of the Rocky Mountain Rangers was officially welcomed to Prince George with the grand opening of their Meadow Armouries on Saturday.
The armoury is located in the old Meadow Elementary School building which was ordered closed in a round of school closures due to declining enrollment in School District 57. But the building isn’t wasting away. A new use for it was found when the Rocky Mountain Rangers signed a 5-year lease with the district.
Saturday’s opening featured speeches and the inspection of the Quarter Guard by Colonel Mackenzie, Commander, 39 Canadian Brigade Group. That was followed by a three hour open house with military equipment, vehicles and weapons as well as other emergency vehicles on display to the public.
Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Tyler, Commanding Officer of the Rocky Mountain Rangers, said re-establishing the army in Prince George has been a long undertaking with several people responsible for it. “For the past three decades a number of prominent people in the community have been lobbying the army to return to Prince George and that finally happened. As well some of our experienced leaders have been instrumental in moving this forward.” He also thanked Mayor Shari Green and the RCMP “for helping us get through our first couple of years.”
Mayor Green told those gathered in the rear school yard that she lives right in that neighbourhood “and when I first learned that we were going to have the Rocky Mountain Rangers in Prince George I was thrilled, and when I learned that they were looking at this building I was even more thrilled because this used to be my son’s school.” She said it was important to make sure the building was put to good use “and I couldn’t think of a better use for this building than what you see here today.” Green said the Armed Forces “defend our freedom and our liberty so that you can voice your opinion and I welcome them in my neighbourhood and I welcome them in my city.”

Colonel Mackenzie said he was “honored to mark this official opening of your new home for “B” Company. This day would not have happened without the vision, hard work and dedication of some very select people.” He recognized the role of Lieutenant Colonel Tyler as commanding officer of the Rocky Mountain Rangers in contributing to the growth of the army reserve in B.C., and specifically in Prince George. He also said that without the work of the core leadership team here things would not have progressed to the point they have reached. “Most importantly what I want to say is thank you to the community. Without that community support we wouldn’t be here today. The army is growing strong roots here with this official opening really being a key marker of an excellent future for “B” Company of the Rangers.”

Looks like book smart survival gear the soldier in the bottom picture has. I think he could replace it all with an axe, a waterproof lighter, and a pot.
What do they do when they run out of propane for the colman stove? That’s a lot of luggage to keep track of and pack around.
I took my oldest niece to it yesterday I was impressed and she really enjoyed it a lot lots of displays and the soldiers gave very informative talks .
They have my full support and am glad they are back in the city.
They call for an air drop eagleone or burn seal oil! What good is an axe in the arctic, except to kill the seals.
Look at that, Eagleone knows more about appropriate survival gear than the military. I’m shocked there’s no lengthy cut & paste article, relating to the subject. Maybe later?
Eagleone you go and show them how to do it right. They will be appreciative of your vast arctic skills. You could also instruct them on how to use arctic trees.
Eagleone…you need to look a little closer at the Coleman stoves…they are the older style that use White Gas/Naptha and NOT propane. (Red Tank on front) Regular Army used to use a single burner version with the tank below the burner.
If you enlarge the photograph. it is easy to see that there are two things which are white – the snow shoes and the sled. Those are the only items.
It is obvious that while the rest of the items might for the Arctic, they are for summer in the Arctic, not winter.
If they pull that gear along with them in the winter using a sled, what do they use in the summer?
Maybe they still need to be outfitted a bit more.
Old Crow, above arctic circle … those strange things on the hills in the background are trees …. :-)

More pictures of Old Crow with those Arctic spruce trees in the background.
BTW, the tree line has been moving further north for many decades, invading the tundra and changing the flora and fauna.

Well said Gus…I’m just glad our troops have the equipment and support these days unlike in past years. Camo tarps instead of the proper boots and uniforms…I still recall Canadian soldiers tied to a post in Bosnia….while our government of the time sat on their duffs! Google the longest confirmed shot with a .50 cal. Canadian Master Corporal Arron Perry of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Perry held the title for only a few days as another man in his unit (Corporal Rob Furlong) bested Perry’s distance with a 2,430 m (2,657 yds.) shot in March 2002. Furlong took the shot while supporting American soldiers during Operation Anaconda in the beginning years of the latest War in Afghanistan. The Americans wanted to award our guys bronze stars…It was in the U.S. news but very little Canadian coverage. I don’t support war….but if they send our kids…they better be suited up with the best….and full support…not like times in the past!
“and I welcome them in my neighbourhood and I welcome them in my city.â
I’m sure she meant “our” city. Or perhaps she did mean her city?
can you posters say NIT PICK?
spend time in military…they always prepare for the situation, this is a sample demonstration, sheesh!
pgdoug …… you may be on the wrong blog …. Facebook has little “like” buttons you can click. Of course “dislike” buttons are not provided.
These type of blogs, if you have ever noticed, make verbal comments which can go positive, negative, neutral ….. go to any newspaper site across this and other countries and you will not see much difference …
Invading the tundra interesting. Is that a military op. Could be the tundra invading boreal forest? I guess it depends on the grant sucking scientist.
Anyhow only a light demo of equipment, not the whole monty.
Isn’t that what the comment section is for? Nitpicking and negative comments?
Unfortunately, as gus said, just about every comment section on every news site is the same.
negative comment = from the point of view of those who support the original comment, a comment which opposes the original view
nitpicking = a comment which explores a general overview by digging deeper into details
;-)
I occasionally visit this site and every once in a while, I’ve even added a post. If there’s one thing that I’ve noticed on this site, it’s that there always seems to be the same old people with the “same old same old”, and all too it’s a negative “same old, same old”.
Can’t help thinking that some people really do need to get a life! Oops, that sounded quite negative!!
gus: “negative comment = from the point of view of those who support the original comment, a comment which opposes the original view”
negative comment = general bit**ing and moaning with no real purpose or offer of solution.
gus: “nitpicking = a comment which explores a general overview by digging deeper into details”
nitpicking = also known as ‘doing a gus’, can also be observed as general speculation, often without facts to back up claims. ;-)
I thought that was called a “seamutt”.

Remember my motto: “the devil is in the details.”
alternatively: “remember the “O-rings”.
An interesting read of opinions and nit-picking associated with the topic of the u-tube video on “O-rings”. ;-)

A deja vu for 250news posters …. :-)
