Rock Mountain Rangers Display Military Wares

Saturday, September 14, 2013 @ 5:31 AM
Prince George, B.C. – The Rocky Mountain Rangers unit in Prince George is inviting the public to come and have a look at its facilities today.

“B” Company of the RMR is holding an open house at its Meadow Armouries at 687 Dornbierer Crescent from 2 until 5 this afternoon. Prior to that, at 1pm,  Colonel Rob Roy Mackenzie, Commander, 39 Canadian Brigade Group and Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Tyler, Commanding Officer of the Rocky Mountain Rangers,  will be joined by Mayor Shari Green in welcoming the Armed Forces back to Prince George following a 42-year absence.

The Rocky Mountain Rangers is a Primary Reserve infantry regiment, an army reserve unit, of the Canadian Forces. Following a lengthy drive to, firstly, spark the interest of and secondly, sign up recruits, “B” Company was formed in 2011.

Commanding Officer Captain Seth Hunter says “Bravo Company currently has 163 soldiers on strength, ranking from Private up to Captain.” He calls that compliment of soldiers here quite remarkable. “It’s a phenomenal success given that the regiment has only had soldiers enrolled since the middle of September, 2011. There has been a lot of interest and phenomenal community support.”

The Meadow Armouries, site of today’s open house, is located in the old Meadow Elementary School. Cpt. Hunter says “as of right now we have a 5-year lease with the board of School District 57 for the building.”  As far as a permanent armoury for Company “B”, he says “for the foreseeable future we have no plans on constructing new armouries here, just due to the fiscal reality. I have never been privy to discussions on building future armouries. My scope has been to lease this facility in Prince George from the school board and our initial lease was for five years, with the ability to re-negotiate at the end of the lease.”

Cpt. Hunter says there are four years remaining on that lease, adding that “as far as I have been led to believe by the school board, they for the foreseeable future do not plan on re-opening the school here.” Captain Hunter says long-term plans for housing the Rocky Mountain Rangers here will come further up the chain of command. Regarding the housing of armaments, firearms, Cpt. Hunter says “the Rocky Mountain Rangers currently have their own facilities to house their armaments.”

About 80 percent of the Meadow Armoury will be opened up for the public to walk through between 2 and 5 this afternoon. There will be vehicle displays, kit displays and weapons to look at. As well, members of the RCMP, B.C. Sheriffs Service and Prince George Search and Rescue will also have vehicles on display.

I took my niece to it today and she loved it as did I it was spartan but that is to be expected with the military she got to hold the standard weapons and a launcher I was impressed with the unit and the way they conducted themselves especially in the heat and being in full dress and combat gear wasn’t easy to maintain composure

Everybody from the soldiers to the police and sheriffs and S&R everybody was informative and took their time to explain things, life in the reserves and didn’t glorify it I am happy to give the unit my full support well done

Yes informative. Brought back memories.

Wish I coulda been there to support our troops, well done Rangers, keep it up!
