Terrace, B.C.- The Independent Investigations Office will not be investigating the death of a Terrace woman who went into medical distress while in the custody of the RCMP.
25 year old Alyssa Oleksiuk was taken into RCMP custody in Terrace on September 3rd. She went into medical distress, was taken to the hospital in Terrace, and was later transferred to Vancouver General where she died this week.
The IIO’s spokesperson, Owen Court, says while the IIO was informed of the situation first with the medical distress and then the death, “After assessing all of the information given to us, there was no evidence that the actions, or inactions of any officer lead to this situation, so the IIO has declined jurisdiction.”
The case is now in the hands of the BC Coroners Service. Normally, when a person dies while in custody, an inquest would be called, but that determination has not yet been made in this case as all of the information has yet to be examined.
