Prince George, B.C. – Those who thought Costco’s entry into the local gasoline market would shake things up appear, at least initially, to be correct.

A check of gas stations around the city on Saturday came up with more variance in prices than has been seen in quite some time. Costco, which opened its pumps to the public on Friday with a price of 129.9 a litre, is charging 127.9 today. Superstore, just down the highway, has matched that price but the Husky on Range Road is selling its regular at 133.9.  Another common fuel price right now is 129.9.

The price of 127.9 is the lowest found in the city today while a couple of stations, which are historically the last to lower prices, are still charging 135.9. We’ll see how long the high and low prices last.

That’s not enough of a price differential to sway me to purchase a membership.

I use on average about 1200 litres of gas per year. A $0.02 price differential is not enough to persuade me to buy a Costco membership that I would otherwise buy.

1,200 X $0.02 = $24 – $55 = $-31

For me to be indifferent to Costco gas over the nearest cheapest alternative, the price/litre at Costco would have be at least 4.5 cents difference. Make it $0.05/litre and I’ll buy a card.

I am happy for the competition in the interim though. Will probably save me money and I don’t have to change a thing. Gotta love it.

Ditto ….

That Costco membership saves money on a lot of other products…such as Levi jeans for children $13.99 or you can buy the same jeans at the Bay for $34.99. Just saying.

So go to Superstore. The others will get the message.

133.9 – 127.9 is 6cents a litre difference, more than 5 cents

Seriously, do we REALLY need 3 stories in 24 hours about the opening of a gas station?????

Canadian Tire is at 129.9. Costco has made some waves in the early going. We’ll see if it keeps up.

As mentioned, a 2 cent difference isn’t much, but if they are constantly putting downward pressure on the prices over the rest of town, it will be a good thing.

Good thing for consumers, but perhaps not as good for retailers around town, but that’s the nature of the beast. Currently, it is more like it should be with different prices everywhere, not the usual price fixing B.S. that our illustrious Competition Bureau does dick about.

Uh pgguy, come on, really? You would take the difference between the lowest & the next lowest to calculate an advantage. Surely you must realize that?

I’m not going to go to the station that charges the most when I can easily just continue to drive down the road to the next place where it’s 6 cents cheaper. Give your head a shake.

Way to go Costco!!!!
These other bandits in town have been ripping us off for decades.Imagine that,an American based company selling our own Canadian gas cheaper than everyone else.Even if the others price match, i say screw them, each and everyone of them could have made a difference but they all chose to join in the gouging.Good for Costco, and shame on the rest!

Sine, actually if i took the highest it would have been 8 cents. I took the station next to Costco. Fuceneh has it right, lets support the one who starts the lower price, not the ones trying to match.

Well, you do your figuring the way you want to pgguy and I’ll keep my money in my pockets and investment accounts.

Other retailers don’t charge you $55/year to buy stuff from them.

“Seriously, do we REALLY need 3 stories in 24 hours about the opening of a gas station?????”

LMAO, that’s about my thought on it as well. Like I said in an earlier post, there some people in PG that have a really bizarre affection to gasoline!

I get enough cash back that more than pays for my Costco membership. All those people that shop there do for a reason. Prices lowered some still bitching amazing.

We are privaleged people who live in such a great country and city that we have the luxury to focus (and gripe) so hard on this type of topic. My English relatives think our gas is almost free it’s so cheap!

It’s the most read story in the last two days… but then what do we know about news.
Most read news service in Central and Northern BC.

And…….they don’t have any squeegees to clean your windshield. And they don’t plan to.

Awesome…….just awesome.

They need a webcam installed so that we can see the lineup, connected to a price display and customer count number.

There is one question I have.

Do they have checkers as cars leave the pump to check each vehicle’s fuel gauge against the receipt? ;-)

“they don’t have any squeegees to clean your windshield”

Now there is a business opportunity!!!

Ha!!! So true. I should buy a squeegee!!!

I think Costco sells them! Do you any shares in Costco sine?

The cost of membership is easily offset by the savings and rebate. But if you don’t want to save you don’t have to shop there. Besides too many memberships means longer lineups.

Sine Nomine: uh,..Costco is a wholesaler, not a retailer.

Me? Well a family member works there, so my card didn’t cost me a cent. And good for you if you only use 1200 lts. per year. I use from 1000-1200 per month so for me it is well worth the lower price.

Costco was at 127 yesterday evening around six.. even lowered their price to 129. GOOD for Costco.. Bout time our prices started coming down.

A couple of hours ago, Superstore and Costco were at $126.9

There were 10 station down to $129.9

The site says that prices are climbing in BC.
=====================================
Costco might say they are wholesalers, but the prices they have are retail prices. Typically competitive with retailers.

I just bought my latest computer there. Two other stores in PG matched the price, but could not match the 2 year warrantee time. I have not bought all my computers there. They have limited selection. However, what they had met my criteria.
======================================

They also do not carry some of the products consistently. They have limited choice, and that choice seems to be based on price point availability and current trends in product popularity.

More selection if you go to costco.ca

Well I have a Costco membership and I buy a lot of stuff there that is way cheaper than anywhere else. I always get a cash back cheque every year that covers my membership. So better deals and the money to renew my membership. So yes I will get my fuel from them.

I buy a lot at Costco that I would normally buy at Save-On. I get the 2% cheque every year for roughly $150-$200. That covers my yearly membership and fair load of groceries at the time.

For the most part, I think Costco is a “go and see what they have” store. If you are not particular about a specific product you are seeking or if you don’t need a great deal of product information or support, it can be a good place to buy stuff.

We had a Costco card in PG, but we didn’t renew it when we moved. I can’t say as though there is anything we miss, but we’re also in a far larger centre with far more competition. I personally don’t feel as though I’m out any money for not shopping there now, but I do crave a hot dog every now and then, LOL. One thing I know for sure is that we throw out a heck of allot LESS food now than when we bought stuff at Costco.

As for gas, I buy it when it’s needed and ‘m certainly not going to go out of my way and drive all over the place to save 1-2 cents per litre. Maybe it’s the fact that the price is advertised in big electronic letters that causes people to become rabid about it, who knows. I wonder if all of the guys here (I say guys because I think that’s probably 75% of the people who are so passionate about this) react the same when they compare prices of macaroni, heads of lettuce, laundry soap or chicken breasts? Do you foam at the mouth if toothpaste at Save-On is $1.49 and the same stuff at Walmart is $1.09?

A five gallon pail of mustard, a same size pail of ketchup, toilet paper and paper towels to last a year. I’m good. Don’t ask about “express lines” there.

I shop at Costco .. alot cheaper that Save- on/ Superstore /Sears and I am not hassled or questioned to death if I do have to return something back. I also get a rebate back which always pays for my membership. Strange how the gas prices can fall asap when 1 retailer sells it cheaper than anyone else.

If I bought 60 tubes of toothpaste each week then yes I would be frothing at the mouth and going to Walmart.

I heard they sell at 15% above wholesale, most retailers charge 50% or more except on big ticket quicker moving electronic items like computers and TVs where they are more competitive
