Prince George, B.C. – Residents of an eight-suite apartment building on Upland Street were evacuated from their homes this morning when a fire broke out on the roof of the building.
Prince George Fire/Rescue crews were called out to 2102 Upland around 10:45 this morning to put the fire out. They did that in quick order as residents and people from the neighbourhood looked on. One resident, Jim, told 250 News that “I was told to get out. I think the roofers started a fire, they had a blow torch up on the roof, they’re fixing the roof. I got a knock on my door and the fireman said get out. So I got out.”
Firefighters on scene had fans running in the building to clear the smoke out. Asked whether he had any indication if residents are going to be allowed back in, Jim said “No they haven’t. I don’t think it’s that bad, this is just precautionary. It was a small fire, but they’ve got to be sure. They inspected all of the apartments and they just turned off the one fan by one entrance.”
Jim explained that there are two separate addresses for the building, one at each entrance. One is 2102, the other 2110. Each address has four suites. “The fire was over on that end (2102) of the building. I’m on this side. They’ve been working on the roof since Friday I believe and they were there today.”
Fire officials have not indicated how much damage there is to the roof of the building, nor whether residents will be allowed back in right away. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Qualified help is hard to get.
Don’t text while roofing…. :-)
BTW, that looks like a flat roof. No construction guardrails visible.
You really have no sense of humour, do you BCRacer?
You really do not have to take everything literally.
Texting while driving. To me that has become a metaphor for not paying attention to what you are doing. Whether he was texting, or going for a pee, or looking for the instruction booklet of how to turn a torch off, who knows.
One thing is at least 99.9% for sure, it was human error.
Roofers have taken over from plumbers for starting the most fires – after arsonists that is. And if you look in the infractions section of worksafe you will see that roofers get the most fines – and they are almost always for not using fall protection.
“Fall protection”? Methinks a secure bicycle helmet would suffice. With that illusion of invincibility and all.
Amazing you can actually find a roofer in this town at all. They must be busy elsewhere as they amongst other tradesmen don’t answer calls.
The thing about “my” search engine is that it is like any other tool, some people are simply more proficient at using it.
Experience is an amazing teacher.
Roofing repair, probably older tar and gravel and fixing a leak area…most newer roofs are equipped with cables on the roof that they can clip their harness into but no idea if this roof has one until you get up there.
Only time they put up construction rails is on a complete reroof
Hope they fixed it with this rain coming down
