Brief Campaign Nets 25 Drivers On Cell Phones

Friday, September 20, 2013 @ 2:55 PM

Prince George, BC – In just a five-hour enforcement campaign yesterday, Prince George RCMP Traffic Services pulled over 25 drivers for talking on their cell phones.

RCMP Corporal Craig Douglass says, "It is not acceptable to drive while talking or texting on a cell phone."

In addition to the distracted driving violations, officers handed out one Immediate Roadside Prohibition, eight tickets to drivers not wearing their seatbelts, and another 10 tickets for various ‘moving’ offences.

"If you need to use your phone, please pull over or invest in a hands-free device," urges Douglass.  "Doing so could save a life."

He says further targetted enforcement is likely.

People just don’t get it, time to make this an impaired charge! That might wake up the people with their little toys!

Brief? If they’d have spent 10 minutes they’d have doubled their catch.

maybe because i’m still sort of young, but it’s flabbergasting that people still drive around in their vehicles without taking the 1 second to click their seatbelt into place. are these people just forgetful, passively suicidal, or ‘the government has no to tell me what to do’ types? can’t figure it out.

I’m not sure if anyone else does it if they pull up beside someone on their phone. but i’ve started making the ‘hang up the phone’ sign with my hand. most people put their hands up like they’re saying, ‘big deal’. i’ve told people i know that admit to talking or texting while driving that it becomes a big deal when they run over my kid or someone else’s because they couldn’t be bothered to pull over or wait 2 minutes to text ‘roflmao’ or ‘c u l8r’.

Only 25 in a 5 hour period? They certainly weren’t looking very hard if that’s all they could find.

However, it’s good to see them doing something about the problem.

Saw a young adult coasting down Hwy 16 toward Domano on his bicycle with heavy traffic, texting, and no helmet yeaterday.

There is no bloody difference in talking on there cell or using Bluetooth device you are still distracted no matter what. But eh what they don’t know will not matter.

I think they should turn some of this over to private enterprise! I am a small business owner and I could make a very good income at this. 25 in 5 hours PUHlease!! 25 in 1 hour would would be easy peasy for a motivated entrepreneur!

Buzzinga yes there is a huge difference. Bluetooth you still have both hands on the wheel, full motion of head and neck ands it comparative to talking to someone in the passenger seat. With holding a cell phone to your ear you loose all that.

Now that texting is illegal it’s worse. Everyone now stares at their crotch instead if paying attention to the road. I noticed 5 drivers all in work vehicles talking on their phones at one red light. Guess they think since they are working the law doesn’t apply to them

I saw a woman on Wednesday, driving into McDonald’s, on the Hart, with a medium sized dog on her lap with its head out the window. When I read this article, I have to ask, what are these people thinking or don’t they have the capacity to think!

Honestjoe, I have to agree with you on this one! Every day without fail, I see people driving and talking on their cell phones! But every day I also see people driving around with loose dogs in their vehicle, all too often sitting on the idiotic driver’s lap.

I have NEVER heard of anyone getting a ticket for driving around with a dog on their lap. If the RCMP and ICBC want to crack down on distracted driving, why are they ignoring some forms of distracted driving, while clamping down on others?

“Cell phone blindness”, google it, you be surprised by the studies they have done and Bluetooth devices aren’t any better than holding one up to your head.
” that it becomes a big deal when they run over my kid or someone”

Exactly! You run over my kid while on your little toy you won’t need a lawyer!

I rarely see the cops do anything about by pedal bikes without helmets, never see them doing anything about people having dogs or cats on their laps when driving.. Must be nice to pick and choose what laws to enforce. I can’t do that at work, must follow all the rules or there is consequences.

I saw a Lomak driver the other day either dialing or texting while going through 22nd on the bypass. Couldn’t believe it. I should have called Lomak and reported it though.

It’s surprising how many city officials, business owners and others that I drive by who are talking on their phone while driving. I guess they believe that they’re above the law too!

And, by the way, talking into your cell phone while it’s on speaker does NOT equal a handsfree or bluetooth device.

I set up hands free years ago when it became available. I find that i drive very poorly while carrying on a conversation. My truck seems to disconnect it for no reason, so i haven’t re-connected for a year and a half. I have three businesses, and i don’t miss the stupid phone calls. I have peace and quiet while i drive, and it isn’t hard to make a call while parked! I don’t see any urgency to “pounce” on a frikken ringing phone, both of mine have message capacity! I must be gettin old

I think they should turn some of this over to private enterprise! I am a small business owner and I could make a very good income at this. 25 in 5 hours PUHlease!! 25 in 1 hour would would be easy peasy for a motivated entrepreneur!

If they didn’t set up roadchecks where you can see them in advance I bet they would have caught a lot more cell phone users

You have only 1 Brain, even with Handsfree you use a percentage for that, the best would be to just turn it off when driving, this way I don’t have to drive around you sitting on the Shoulder making your Call.
I got a better way to fine the Offenders, First Offence you get a Week off Driving, 2nd a Month, that will teach them!

“if I remember right I think the unsecured dog in a vehicle is an SPCA thing…good luck get them to do anything.”

They did have a campaign, and still do, to get the RCMP to do something about it. It was and still is in the MVA regarding dogs in the back of open box pickups. It is a ticketable offence for many reasons which deal with road safety, not dog safety.

The RCMP and ICBC can also do something about ANYTHING lose in the vehicle from the point of view of flying objects which can injure people in the car, plus animals which can distract.

The BCSPCA has no authority in that regard. All they can do is raise awareness.

Next, stereo’s outlawed while driving. Music is too distracting while driving

If the insanity doesn’t stop victims will soon take action. Like suing the driver for wrongful death or the manufacturer for not disabling the device automatically when traveling faster than 10kM/hr. Call it car mode just like airplane mode but automatic.
