RCMP Urging Safety Following Motorcycle Crash

Tuesday, September 24, 2013 @ 2:58 PM

Prince George, BC – Because a picture is ‘worth a thousand words’, Prince George RCMP have released a photo of the damaged ‘skull cap’ style helmet worn by a city man who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash five days ago…

In just releasing details of Friday night’s crash, Media Liaison Officer, Corporal Craig Douglass, says a 54-year-old man sustained serious head injuries when he was thrown from his motorcycle, after striking a concrete median on 15th Avenue, near Central Street.

Corporal Douglass says the single rider was travelling westbound when the crash occurred just before 11pm.  After being initially taken to the University Hospital of Northern BC, the victim has since been transferred to a hospital in the lower mainland.

Douglass says officers at the scene recovered the damaged helmet, which is not Department of Transportation approved and, therefore, illegal.

The RCMP officer is urging riders to always wear an approved helmet.  In addition, he’s encouraging those who ride afer dark to take the extra steps necessary to ensure they’ll be seen – saying properly functioning lights are a must and high visibility vests are strongly recommended.

two dollar hat on a two dollar head – but he sure looked cool I bet

ps – even DOT rating is not enough in my book. Buy a real helmet folks, dont worry about what they wear on “Sons of Anarchy”

pps – I do hope the guy is ok though!

Truth in telling a story.

I know that those helmets might not be the best in the world, but please let us not go overboard.

The safety of a helmet is very much dependent on with what force the helmet is hit and where it is hit with that force.

A helmet does not make a person invincible.

I very much agree with the “even DOT rating is not enough in my book” statement.

any word as to why he was thrown from his bike ?

@ Saywho: a 54-year-old man sustained serious head injuries when he was thrown from his motorcycle, after striking a concrete median on 15th Avenue, near Central Street.

That’s why he was thrown.

interceptor I am betting your hat would cost $1

lol

How does someone get something better than DOT rated?

Snell rating.

No matter what the rating a helmet will not stop the brain from moving on impact inside the skull . Any helmet is only good for a direct impact of 30 mph give or take . But that said a good helmet will in a lot of cases save on serious injury as long as it is fitted and worn properly .

That’s too bad. Serious head injury and 54 years old, probably equates to he’ll never recover if he survives at all.

Terrible.

ICBC and the RCMP seem to spend a lot of time, effort and money enforcing distracted driving, seatbelt and speeding violations. Why are so many motorcycle riders riding around without approved helmets?

Luck of the draw really. I know of two guys that got in major accidents in the last few months.

One guy he cuts a deer in half with his big touring Harley just west of McBride about two months ago and writes the bike off, but is able to stand up and only misses a month of work (has the best riding gear). Other guy from what I understand might of hit some marbles on the Willow a few weeks back, and he is now in Vancouver in serious condition.

These things involve luck or lack there of sometimes, and its anyone’s guess when things go awry. Nothing in life is risk free.

I ride and I always wear a new approved helmet. Is there a law that allows people to wear religious headwear and not wear a helmet?

Full face helmet for me period. Dot is fine Snell is better. Street bike/Quad etc. Full face helmet, or just don’t bother wearing one. You only need a helmet on when you crash, so if you know your not gonna crash then you don’t need one lol. Only problem is I don’t know when I am gonna crash, hence I wear a full face helmet.

Hope that person doesn’t have any permanent brain damage, and fully recovers
