Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Cougars officially kick off their 20th WHL season in Prince George with a two-game set against the arch-rival Kamloops Blazers on CN Centre ice this weekend.
The Cougars’ front office held a media conference at the rink Thursday afternoon to roll out their plans for this anniversary season. Vice-president Brandi Brodsky says the club is excited about kicking off its 2013-14 home season tonight, adding “we have designed a special retro jersey that we’re going to wear for the game, and the auction for those jerseys is going to be strictly online at our web site. We’ll have the current bids listed so fans can see what the current prices are and bid that way. All of the money raised will be going to Spirit of the North Healthcare. We raised a good chunk when we did this a few years ago and we’re hoping for a similar result this time.”
Brodsky says home opening night also includes the tailgate party from 5 to 7pm, barbecue proceeds going to Big Brothers Big Sisters, face painting and games for the kids, and some outdoor entertainment.
Brodsky also announced that the Cougars have a new partner for the 50-50 draw, the Cariboo Cougars. She says in past years minor hockey helped out with the 50-50 “but this year we’re going to have the Cariboo Cougars doing it. They’re looking for some different ways to fundraise to help offset some of the costs kids have in playing in that league. So if there’s something we can do to help sports in the north, I think this is it. I think its going to be a great partnership. There’s going to be things we’re doing inside the building at our games and outside as well. We’re looking forward to this partnership.” Brodsky says plenty of surprises and special events are planned throughout this 20th anniversary season.
Cougars head coach Mark Holick says “we’re looking forward to getting it going here at home. We’re coming back from a bit of a tough road trip but finished very strong and had a great week of practice so we’re looking forward to the (Friday night) game and hope to see a full building.
The Cougars face the Blazers tonight and Saturday at 7pm.

Yippeee…Another Cougar season…..another useless waste of time.
Are taxpayers of Prince George still subsidizing this team?
Surprise surprise, nothing but negative comments.
I on the other hand am glad to see the Cougars support local hockey. Not only that, I’m excited for them to announce how they raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Spirit of the North at their Golf Tourney tonight at their home opener.
Hopefully partnering with the Cariboo Cats will give the Cougars organization the feeling of dealing with a winning organization….maybe it will rub off on them…first 3 games outscored 18-6
