Prince George, B.C. – Fire and police Investigators will be on scene today trying to determine the cause of an early-morning fire on Victoria Street.

The blaze at the Homeland Inn (formerly Ranch Motel) in the 1600 block Victoria was reported at 1:55 a.m. and was responded to by 15 firefighters from three halls. The occupants got out safely and several tenants in other units of the facility were relocated by Victim Services. Some tenants further away from the blaze were permitted to remain in their suites.  There were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

Assistant Fire Chief Elden Gjerde says the one unit was fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene. He said the exact location where the fire broke out has not been pinpointed. “They are quite small suites and determining the exact spot of origin, that will be done by the fire investigation crew.”

The RCMP has been on scene since the fire broke out and has cordoned off the immediate area with yellow tape. Asked whether there is anything suspicious about the cause of the fire, A/C Gjerde says “We’re just going to go with undetermined at this time. We won’t know anything further until the unit has been checked out.”

The one unit is gutted, with fire and smoke damage to two other units. Damage is estimated at $100,000.

Imagine that…

Let the demolition begin!!
Time to move on. Hope they didn’t all move to the Connaught, just down the road.

Glad no one was injured in this fire. Given the type of construction and the age of the structure, plus the fact that (I assume) smoking was permitted, a fire, in my opinion, was inevitable. It will be interesting to see what develops at the site, will the entire place be torn down?
Will they rebuild the damaged areas and use the momentum to fix up the entire motel?

Hey at least the Connaught is constructed from brick and concrete, with 1970’s era fire separations, a fire there would probably be limited to the room in which it started.
metalman.

“Round up the usual suspects”. (Casablanca)

Neighbours will be happy to see it gone.

Who called the fire department?

$100k damages= 200 bucks building damage and the rest was “contents”

Better get Walter White and Jesse Pinkman to cook one more batch before they fold the tent tomorrow:D (BReaking BAd)

Not surprise at all.

Neighbors and businesses in the area will be happy to see it gone. They have to be moved someplace. It would be SAD to see the Connaught turn into the same condition as nothing is done as far as upgrading goes to it. The Connaught was one of P.G’s. best motels in its day and still has hope if someone who cared about it and would do something with it. It is probably owned by another out of town owner.

I think if the Connaught were run by the right agency, it would be a great place for low income housing which is very much needed. Look at the old Jacob’s motel on Queensway; very strict rules and very little trouble there.

We have enough low Income rentals in the area and with the Government owned mega project going in on 20th we have our share. We need the Connaught turned back into a top notch motel. It’s being used for low Income housing now.

They are building a new hotel next door to the Connaught so that should hopefully put a fire under their britches to make it a top notch hotel again. They have everything needed, restaurant, conference rooms, laundry, and stand alone rooms. Get the logging trucks to pull in like the Carmel

Let’s watch how fast something gets put up for the Winter Games! How convenient.
