Quesnel, B.C.- The Quesnel Airport Development Plan has been given a financial boost from the Northern Development Initiative Trust.

NDIT has approved a $244,815 grant to expand the apron at the Quesnel Airport.

The current apron is 52,500 square feet, and the expansion will add another 22,500 square feet, boosting the apron’s size by 42%.

The increased apron size will provide access to a new multi-use hangar that is expected to boost economic activity for the city in aviation related businesses. Those businesses range from flight schools to technical training, and aircraft maintenance.

“Our airport is an important part of Quesnel’s transportation system and it is wonderful to see the lands being utilized to enhance the airport’s capacity," said City of Quesnel Mayor Mary Sjostrom. "It is exciting to see the project moving forward."

Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2014. Once complete, the expanded area will provide more options for parking aircraft,  improve access to on-site services and give airport maintenance personnel more room to manoeuvre large equipment.
