Lots Of Junk In The Trunk
Bargain hunters survey the 3rd Junk in the Trunk garage sale yesterday
Prince George, BC – The local Junk in the Trunk giant garage sale is timed to take advantage of what is a seasonal event for many – the fall cleaning frenzy…
With an eye to keeping some of those now-less-than prized possessions out of the landfill, the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George and Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS) teamed up for their 3rd community garage sale in the parking lot at CN Centre yesterday.
As the photo of almost-three-year-old Sahil Caila shows, city residents were happy to come out in the rain for the chance to find a ‘new’ treasure.
And RDFFG’s Waste Diversion Program Leader, Rachael Ryder, says that’s the whole idea. "People acquire a lot of junk, but it’s that idea that your junk might be someone else’s treasure."
"It’s the idea that you don’t need it, but it doesn’t really need to go in the landfill," she says. "It’s a way of re-circulating these items because other people can use them."
REAPS Executive Director, Terry McClymont, adds, "It’s a one-stop shop because people love garage sales and why not come to a garage sale with 20 to 50 vendors, instead of driving around and creating more of an impact on the environment with your emissions."
The sale is held twice per year – in October to coincide with Waste Reduction Month and in April on Earth Day.
Next up for REAPS is the annual Recycled Toy Drive, which collects quality used toys to give back to local childrens community groups over the holidays. City residents can drop off toys on November 23rd between 10am and 2pm at the REAPS compost garden at 1950 Gorse Street.

Wouldn`t it be a great idea to set up a swap shed at the landfill?
I sure don`t want to spend the day sitting in the rain trying to get rid of stuff I don`t want.
That is a great idea tractor, trouble is all the bad ideas are the ones that stick around. Of coarse they might charge money to go there. Just go down all the bush roads lots of junk thrown off there.
X-it
“Just go down all the bush roads lots of junk thrown off there”
Our gracious Mayor when told this would happen her comment was “Oh no the people of Prince George would not do something like that” Me thinks she was wrong :-)

She didn’t say that.
Prove it! ;-)
