No.2 Thunderbirds take two in double header with Timberwolves

Sunday, October 6, 2013 @ 3:21 PM

PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The No.2 UBC Thunderbirds extend their winning streak to eight games after a 3-0 win over the UNBC Timberwolves. The Thunderbirds advance to 9-1 while the Timberwolves fall to 1-5-2.

Scoring opened up in the second minute as UBC’s Milad Mehrabi (Coquitlam, BC) got a through ball from Niall Cousens (Vancouver, BC). Mehrabi bypassed the defender firing a shot past UNBC keeper Ty Venhola (Abbotsford, BC), giving the Thunderbirds an early 1-0 lead. Mehrabi would strike again in minute 17. A direct free kick was awarded to the Thunderbirds just outside the 18 yard box on the left side of the field. Harry Lakhan (Surrey, BC) passed the ball 5 metres out to Mehrabi instead of taking a shot of his own; Mehrabi buried the ball into the bottom left hand corner. At half time the Thunderbirds led 2-0 over UNBC.

The Timberwolves started slow but built momentum throughout the game. Second year Tyson Hunter was named UNBC’s MVP for the game much in part to his hustle and determination in winning the individual battles in the midfield. Hunter initiated scoring opportunities; in the first half a stolen ball led to a quick pass up field from Hunter to Cheona Edzerza (Prince George, BC). Edzerza played the ball across to Tofa Fakunle (Calgary, AB) who put the ball up for header by fellow rookie Jake Vickers (Calgary, AB)., The attempt was saved by UBC keeper Richard Meister (Port Moody, BC) who finished the game with his first shut-out of the season.

In the second half an own goal by UNBC added to the Thunderbirds scoring count. Reynold Stewart (Delta, BC) dribbled the ball into the 18 years box and attempted to cross the ball when a miss placed header from the Timberwolves bounced back into the net. The two goals from Milad Mehrabi (Coquitlam, BC) in the first half added to the own goal in minute 71 to give the Thunderbirds a 3-0 win over the Timberwolves.

The No.2 UBC Thunderbirds continue their regular season play next weekend when they host the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on October 11, and Mount Royal University on October 12. The Timberwolves travel next weekend to Alberta to play the University Lethbridge and the University of Calgary on October 13-14.
