Corporate Sponsors Wanted for Civic Plaza Upgrade

Tuesday, October 15, 2013 @ 3:54 AM

Prince George, B.C.- The final design for the revamped Civic Centre Plaza (Canada Games Plaza) has yet to be decided, as it will all depend on the dollars that can be confirmed  by the end of this year.

The City has set aside $500 thousand dollars for the upgrade, and applications are being made for grants that could boost that to a million dollars.

Northern Development Initiative Trust has confirmed the City will get $30 thousand from its coffers, but the call is out to   corporations to see if they are willing to make a donation so the plaza will be developed to its full potential.

“I have been making presentations to a variety of groups” says Myles Tycholis, Manager, Prince George Civic Centre/Project Lead “Each time I make a presentation, people come up to me and make suggestions on even more potential contacts.”

The Plaza will be the centre of activity for cultural events and medal presentations during the Canada Winter Games. It will also be the centre of the City’s Centennial celebrations.

Tycholis says there is a variety of opportunities for corporate sponsorship including public art and a performance stage.

But    the financial commitments have to be made by the end of this year. That will allow the design team enough time to know exactly what can be built with the available dollars and the requests for proposals can be issued in the early spring.

Hmm… the Shaw Civic Centre, or maybe the Telus Civic Centre? Any other predictions?

Wendy’s Civic Plaza sound better or how about that new winery?

Not bad NoWay, patty bell would be pleased ;-)

Enbridge Civic Centre Plaza … anyone?

yep, its enbridge

Good Lord!!!!

The City is at it again!!!!

Simple question: What do we NEED to do for the functions that will go on? Remember, will be WINTER.

How that simple question got turned into: What do we WANT, is beyond me!

Then again, it shouldn’t be anymore. We have watched and watched the band of bandits who call themselves administration and council get the NEEDS and the WANTS all screwed up.

Suggestion ….

1. lose the rocks in a cage ….

Let’s see some more suggestions of how to CUT costs to this plaza fiasco.

I agree with Gus. As usual the City is out of control when it comes to spending money.

Northern Development Initiative Trust will throw in $30,000.00 pretending that this is money from a different source.

All NDIT money came about from the sale of BC Rail and was given to NDIT by the Government, therefore all monies in NDIT are tax dollars (this would include any interest that they make) So lets just say that at this point there will be $530,000.00 of our tax dollars going into this mis-adventure.

Funny, not that long ago we had a radiothon for Northern Health to raise $100,000 for a specialized ultra sound that we desperately needed. And yet, when it comes to anything to do with the Winter Games – money is no problem.

Rocks in a cage……sounds like someone is trying so sneak the River Road dyke in through the back door:)

Needle Exchange Plaza?

How about *1 million bucks of new features buried under 5 feet of snow Plaza*?

I have a suggestion.

How about they drop the $500,000 upgrade altogether, that they move extra snow to the location (if required) and that they reach out to the local arts community to turn the plaza into an area of snow sculptures and other similar fixtures to celebrate the spirit of the games?

Heck, develop a plan where various teams can compete and the winner would get a $50K donation towards an arts related group or charity of their choice.

There, I just saved the city $450,000 and I probably came up with an idea that could attract people from across the country to come to PG and share their talents for the whole nation to see.

Seeing as the square will have the strong smell of the Huskey Refinery, then why not ask them to advertise.
