Cougars Take Down Silvertips in OT.
For the first time in 2013-2014, the Prince George Cougars are over the .500 mark thanks to some Saturday overtime heroics. Brad Morrison broke a 3-3 tie at the 1:15 mark of overtime, and the Prince George Cougars grabbed their fifth victory of the season. Chase Witala had two goals and Ty Edmonds stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced in goal to record his fifth win of the season.
Things did not start off well for the Cougars who trailed 2-0 in the late stages of the first period. Jujhar Khaira opened the scoring off a two-on one, and Kohl Bauml quickly followed with a shorthanded marker.
Shortly after Bauml’s goal, the Cougars got back within one. Chase Witala took a Jordan Tkatch pass on the right wing, spun towards the goal and beat Daniel Cotton with a quick wrist shot for his second of the season. Witala’s goal came on the power play which marks the third straight game that the Cougars have scored on the man advantage.
50 seconds into the second period the Cougars tied the game. Chase Witala took advantage of an Everett defensive miscue and ripped a shot past Daniel Cotton for his second of the game.
Everett would restore their one-goal lead in the late stages of the second when Carson Stadnyk lifted a shot over the left shoulder of Ty Edmonds for his third of the season.
In the final minute of the second period, the Cougars caught a break when the Everett Silvertips iced the puck with 22 remaining in the second. Silvertips coach Kevin Constantine decided to call a timeout to rest his skaters and map out a defensive strategy.
Ultimately that decision backfired as right off the face off, Alex Forsberg centered a pass to Zach Pochiro who was able to tuck the puck past Daniel Cotton for his fourth of the year, and for a second straight night, the Cougars and Silvertips were tied after two periods.
The Cougars outshot Everett 12-6 in the third, but were unable to solve Daniel Cotton. At the other end, Ty Edmonds was equally as sharp, turning away the Everett opportunities as they were presented.
60 minutes solved nothing, and overtime would once again be required.
75 seconds into the extra frame, the game came to an end. Troy Bourke made a great move behind the Everett net to escape the defender, and he centered the puck to the goal mouth where the waiting Brad Morrison potted his third of the season.
It was the first overtime victory of the season for the Cougars who improved their record to 5-4-0-1 through 10 games. They have now earned at least one point in three consecutive games.
The final shot tally was 43-29 in favor of Prince George. The Cougars went one-for-three on the power play but also surrendered their fifth shorthanded goal against so far this season. On the flipside, Everett went without a power play for the entire game.
The Cougars will now take to the road for a four game southern road swing which kicks off on Monday afternoon in Victoria.

What a great weekend of hockey the boys played. If not for a bizarre ruling by the not so competent officials on Friday night, they would have won both games.
If you believe some Cougar fans, they’ve been the most punished team by referees in hockey history.
