Prince George, B.C.- Around and around and around they go. Members of the RCMP detachments in Prince George, Quesnel and Terrace, as well as the BC Conservation Service, were learning operating techniques in the UTV (side by side) on property at the Exhibition grounds today.
“Basically, we are doing the Canada Safety Council’s UTV course” says P.G. Traffic Services Sergeant Al Steinhauser. Once the officers have completed ( and passed) the course requirements, they will be authorized to use the machines under Canada Labour Code and WorkSafe BC regulations.
The course teaches the principles of the UTV, and handling procedures.
The UTV is a positive tool for the enforcement agencies, especially at this time of the year says Sgt, Steinhauser “ We have have thousands of square miles to cover, a lot of that is offroad, and with hunting season here, it can help us enforce regulations, or locate lost hunters. Because two people can ride in this machine, it means we can carry a person who is in distress out of the bush if necessary.”
He says the 8 people taking the course today have noticed the difference in handling a UTV over a regular quad. “With the ATV it’s a driver activated mechanism, ( weight shifting etc) these sit a little bit wider than a standard ATV and that means you can have two people on it. They (UTV) have limitations, but they are the best of both worlds for safety aspects for our members and Conservation Officers.”

Just a little bit bigger and it will need licence plates.
I’ll be very surprised if all ATV’s and UTV’s aren’t required to be fully licensed and insured within 5-10 years.
Whoopee Ding””””””
Hotel and quad track….c’mon Palopu, what’s more northern redneck than that ?
And just who is the proud new owner of this suddenly new sold land ?
Hey Al, how about a video of a Pit maneuver with an ATV? LMAO!
Hey and remember, isn’t it worksafe that limits their use to no more than a 5 degree slope?
This is cool though, I have often wondered if the Royal Car Mashing Police receive any driver training.
I am surprised that steinhauser fit in behind the steering wheel what did they use a shoehorn!!!!!!!!!!!!
To bad they couldn’t find a flatter piece of ground to train on.
Its unfortunate that this site/blog is starting to turn into a negative, sarcastic site controlled by a few.
I am actually happy to see that if we are supplying the tools for people to use to do there jobs effectively that we also have the common sense to give them proper training to do it Safely!
I just hope they can use these to catch the poacher that shot a bear and moose in Tabor Mountain pit and then left the dead carcasses there to rot. What a complete waste.
Eagleone. Do we know that they were shot?? Sometimes the Highway Dept throws road kill into pits.

It is WorkSafeBC that has a regulation based on operating on sloped ground.
It is a 5 percent grade, not 5 degree. 5% is even less than 5 degrees.
The regulations states that one can operate a machine on a slope greater than that IF there is a written Standard Operating Procedure available, kept with the machine, and the rider/driver is instructed how to apply it.
Normally the Operator’s manual indicates the maximum slope allowed for the machine. I have not seen any that are greater than around 25%. A UTV should not be used on slopes as steep as one can use an ATV since the UTV is not rider active.

“Because two people can ride in this machine, it means we can carry a person who is in distress out of the bush if necessary”
Can’t be in too much distress since they would not fit into the seat if they require a leg brace, etc. and they must be able to have a seat belt on and wear a helmet.
I’m sorry but this is insane … My husband works for highways … As a requirement of his job he was the one who had to pick up and remove that moose and that bear that everyone is talking about being poached! They were not animals that were shot or poached INFACT THEY WERE ROAD KILL REQUESTED BY PG CITIZENS TO REMOVE FROM THAT AREA! These animals were dead and were requested to be removed !!! THEY WERE not poached! TIRED OF PEOPLE SPOUTING OFF EMOTIONS NOT FACTS!!
