Mystery Drum Spill Closes Portion of Highway 16
Hazmat team on scene of spill on Hwy16 at Westgate- photo 250news
Prince George, B.C. – Highway 16 eastbound at Westgate Avenue should reopen by about 4 this afternoon.
That stretch of highway was closed and east bound drivers forced to take a detour after the Hazmat tea was called out to deal with a substance.
Assistant Deputy Chief Thad Kennedy says a passerby made the call around 1:30 this afternoon, when they spotted a 45 gallon drum rolling down the highway and spewing material.
With no labelling on the drum, the Fire department took all necessary precautions.
The Hazmat techs worked with the Canadian Transport Emergency Centre to identify the material. All testing came back neutral. It is thought the drum may have been holding some sort of cooking material.
The drum has since been placed into a hazardous goods container, and has been taken away by YRB.
The section of Highway 16 will reopen once the clean up has been complete.

Quick, someone should ban trucks carrying 45 gallon drums of cooking fat….maybe a pipeline should be built. ;)
I don’t think this is funny!
Another Careless Driver with a unsecured Load, lets just say it’s full of Water, 45 Gallon = 450 Pound and it falls on you while passing him. Do I have do say more ? Now you can debate was it more or less and can it kill you.
Outwest said: “I don’t think this is funny!”
Who said it was funny? How do you know it was unsecured? Maybe his/her rope broke…sorry you didn’t get the point.
Welp, you all heard Outwest, if we are going to “chew the fat” on this one, we should do so seriously.
