Houston Mill Closure, Huge Blow – Cullen

Friday, October 25, 2013 @ 3:39 PM
Houston, B.C.-  Calling yesterday’s announcement that West Fraser would close it’s mill in Houston “a blow few people realistically expected,” MP Nathan Cullen is vowing to do all he can to help the community  adjust and move forward.

“The most important thing right now is to support the many hundreds of people whose jobs are being affected by these cuts,” Cullen said.  “Then we’ll come together as community to begin planning for a solid future in the long term.”

There are 225 employees at the Houston mill.

Cullen is speaking with community, company and union leaders in Houston, and will meet with key federal ministers in Ottawa to explore possible aid from senior government.

West Fraser and Canfor announced  a timber tenure swap and  mill closures as  their  way of dealing with the  decline in merchantable timber in the wake of the pine beetle infestation. The Canfor  sawmill in Quesnel is also closing,  impacting 209  employees.

“MP Nathan Cullen is vowing to do all he can to help”…..lay the groundwork for a run at the vacant job at the top:P

As much as I dislike the NDP it’s good to see someone like Nathan come along every now and again who seems genuinely interested in his constituents and their well-being.

Call me cynical axman but I see Cullen as a political opportunist, turned down draft movement when Dix won as he figured he could ride Jack Layton’s coattails to bigger things in Ottawa and now that has gone sideways will take another look at the provincial scene.

Yup, that’s lonesome… someone who can read anyone’s mind and knows the motives behind actions of others. Can you share your crystal ball with the rest of us?

Happy Halloween…

This is his job as a critic, but with the MPB and AAC drops is it really something few people expect? And it is his job as the MP for the skeena – bulkley valley to do everything he can to help the community.

These people work for Canfor, they know their jobs are not based on any community spirit. West Fraser will probably ramp up in Quesnel increasing the job base and Canfor will ramp up its Supermill in Houston with the tenure swap.
