Timberwolves fall to No.9 Vikes in final season game
PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The Timberwolves played their final game of the season against the No.9 University of Victoria Vikes on Sunday, October 27. The Vikes came away with a convincing 4-0 win to move into the post season with a 10-3-1 record, while the Timberwolves finish their 2013 campaign at 2-9-3.
The Vikes started strong and maintained their pressure throughout the game scoring four goals, two in each half. Third year midfield Cam Hundal (Terrace, BC) put away two, one in each half. His first goal came off an expertly placed free kick from Craig Gorman (Victoria, BC); Hundal was able to head the ball past the Timberwolves keeper in minute 33 to give the Vikes a 2-0 lead. Cam Stokes (Richmond, BC) and Sam Prette (Victoria, BC) each contributed to the Vikes 4-0 win.
The Timberwolves played aggressive through the first half looking to get on the board but were unable to create the scoring chances that would put Vikes keeper Elliot Mitrou (Victoria, BC) under pressure. For UNBC it was keepers Mitch Macfarlane (Prince George, BC) and Ty Venhola (Abbotsford, BC) who shined despite the score line. The keepers split time evenly and deflected a total of 12 shots on goal while withstanding the Vikes rapid fire. UVic totalled 30 shots in comparison to the Timberwolves six.
An early goal by UVic’s Cam Stokes in the seventh minute was the result of a rebound Stokes put back behind the out of place keeper. The early 1-0 deficit did not appear to deter the Timberwolves who continued to battle in the midfield, notably rookie midfielder Luke Holmes (Prince George, BC). Holmes got his first start of season and took home MVP honours for the Timberwolves. Holmes was instrumental in disrupting the Vikes attack through the centre.
The Vikes wouldn’t strike again until a free kick in minute 33 gave way to a header from Cam Hundal and the Vikes second goal. Craig Gorman (Victoria, BC) set up for the free kick and knocked across the field into the box in front of the left post. Hundal got up above his defender and headed the ball straight to the back of the net. The Vikes carried their 2-0 lead into the second half.
The second half showed more of the same with the Vikes controlling possession and the Timberwolves disrupting wherever possible. UVic would add two more goals to their tally before the end of the game. Sam Prette added one in the 76th minute, Adam Ravenhill (Victoria, BC) was credited with the assist, and the last goal came in added time from Hundal. The Vikes worked the ball down the right side to Stokes who played it into Dominic Colantonio (Victoria, BC). Colantonio swung the ball across the box to Hundal who found the back of the net to give the Vikes a 4-0 lead. Colantonio was given MVP honours for the Vikes.
In their final regular season game the No.9 University of Victoria Vikes defeated the UNBC Timberwolves 4-0. The Timberwolves did not qualify for playoffs while the Vikes will continue to the Canada West playoffs next weekend hosted by the No.1 UBC Thunderbirds.
