Booze at CN Centre and Kin 1 Served Up to Council
Monday, November 4, 2013 @ 3:58 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Council for the City of Prince George will be taking a look at the results of the alcohol pilot project that opened the doors for alcohol sales in the CN centre. Staff would like to start a public consultation process in which they can gather opinion and put together a final policy that would be in place when the new Kin Centre is ready.
Staff say the pilot project which allowed for alcohol consumption in specified areas of the general seating for Cougars games and other appropriate concerts and events worked well. According to the report to Council, alcohol related issues dropped from a high of three incidents per game, to zero incidents per game and there was no increase in alcohol related incidents during concerts or events.
Staff would like to have Kin 1 granted a permanent liquor licence, saying it provides a revenue generating opportunity for the City.
Staff propose a public consultation session later this month.

Will they provide free beer for the session? Might get people to talk a bit more openly … ;-)
If they want to generate revenue just tax all the kids who play in Kin 1. Or put on slot machines.
@BCRacer…It’s even more sad that you judge people who like to enjoy a beer at a hockey game. I don’t drink at Cougars games because I “have to” but because I chose to.
Just after the story about a business being charged for serving to someone that is drunk. The City Tax payers should not be in the business of selling alcohol period.
So how many can you drink Langdon before you can legally drive home? One? Two ? Do you even know? Have you ever blown in. breathalyzer?
What do they consider an “alcohol related event”? Does this mean a fight or some other sort of kerfuffle? What about the ones who quietly pass out from intoxication? The last time I was at the CN Centre was for Mellencamp and I was astonished at how many people were just completely blotto yet it appeared that they were still being sold beer. I guess if you can still walk and talk you’re not considered too drunk to be sold liquor.
I’m no prude and definitely enjoy a drink or two, but I am very reluctant to go back to CN Centre for a concert, given this experience. I’d really like to see Thorogood, but if folks goon it up for Mellencamp, the Thorogood show ought to be a total horror show.
Nope, better to keep the booze out of the seats for concerts and keep ’em all nice and peaceful on reefer.

Why would anybody “choose” to drink beer at CN Centre? I’m not damning that you want to have one, but the product is so bloody lousy, it’s not worth 25 cents a cup.
It’s no secret that arena beer is terrible and overpriced. I think it’s $8 to have a bad cup of beer at a Canucks game.
That all being said, if the City can generate a little money from beer sales to offset some of the operating costs, go for it.
The vast majority can handle a beer or two at a game if they choose. Why do we have a dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator?
Totally agree JohnnyBelt. Besides, the reckless drunks that are going to puke, pass out or fight (or all of the above) at a Cougars game are going to either A) already be hammered when they get to the game, B) sneak in their own mickey anyway, or C) both.
Why should I not be able to enjoy a couple of overpriced and lousy cold brew if I so choose just because Bubba the Knuckledragger is going to prove Darwin right eventually regardless?
The beer they serve at CN centre is detrimental enough not to even have one in the first place. Yet alone pay $7:00 for the crap…
Either way if im going to the CN centre its not to drink its to be entertained without feeling the need to have a couple drinks.. That doesnt mean im against the people who do want to have a couple drinks..Its all about personal choice..
Cheers!!
I don’t mind having crappy over priced beer. but couldn’t it be served in a better cup than those cheap plastic cups that folds in when your trying to hold it.
7 bucks for a tiny glass of beer along with dismal attendance at the CN center does more to curtail alcohol consumption and rowdy behaviour than anything the city guru’s could come up with.
Wow.. you mean people cant attend a sporting event with out a beer. Whats next.. people will be having wine with dinner in restaraunts ? maybe even have a beer or two. Cant go a dinner without drinking.. yikes..
@BCRacer….again, you are judging me…I don’t “NEED” beer to make the event palatable. But I appreciate the option of enjoying a beer while I watch.
And regarding your last Cougars comment…have you been to a game this year? Because the team is playing great and putting in the best effort I’ve seen in years. Just ask anyone who’s been going to the games. As a hockey fan, it’s been fantastic hockey.
BCracer.. umm.. they kind of do really.. called sports pubs.. cant watch all kind of live sports.. not only that.. a rumour has it you can order alcohol there too. You mean people cant go to a bar without having to have a drink… what kind of society is this…..????
JB: “Why do we have a dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator?”
Uh, isn’t that what the beer’s are for?
@Krusty: If one or two beer is gonna do that, we have other problems! :-)
I don’t care if you want to drink at a hockey game but the last game we went to was ruined by three extremely intoxicated guys yelling and screaming profanities at the opposing team. There were a couple of kids who asked their parents what those words meant. I don’t think a hockey game is the place for a parent to have to explain to their child what a “f**king p***y” is. Multiple people in the section complained and they did nothing so we ended up leaving and finding new seats and of course we saw them walking back to the seats with three cups of beer each.
Next time call the cops moose and they will be hauled away for being drunk in public. And they were sold more beer? Pathetic, simply pathetic!
I agree witht he comment about the city being liable for idiot drinking drivers after an event at the CN Centre.
Or has the City shirked that responsibility by contracting out the beer sales?
metalman.
