Boundary Road Grand Opening Near
Tuesday, November 5, 2013 @ 3:56 AM
Prince George, B.C- Boundary Road, a project that has been in the works for more than three years, is expected to officially open later this month.
The project is to link highway 16 to highway 97 and will become part of the dangerous goods route.
The project ran into some challenges in the early days of the development with poor weather and very sloppy clay conditions that helped delay construction.
The 6.8km road was being built at a cost of $28 million dollars. Of that amount, $7.5 million came from federal funding, $7.5 million in provincial funding, $6.5 million in City of Prince George funding, and $6.5 million in private developer funding.
The project will provide two lanes of asphalt roadway complete with bike lanes and sidewalks. The roadway has been promoted as being key to development of the Airport Logistics park.
Prince George City Council has also been brought up to date on three other projects:
–RCMP Building: Interior finishing underway, and new furnishings being purchased. Official opening set for November 16th, but RCMP won’t actually move in until mid December. The good news, is, that although the City is spending more than $300 thousand on new furniture, the City is actually saving about half a million dollars in furniture needs for the new detachment. “E” Division just moved into its new building in Surrey and has some furniture from its former home that it has “donated” to Prince George. That donation ( valued at about $550 thousand) the new purchases, and about $126 thousand dollars worth of existing furniture that will be moved into the new building. The cost of the furniture was budgeted for in the overall budget for the new RCMP building.
–Kin 1: staff report mechanical and electrical work continues, the concrete arena slab and ice slab installed. No significant events or bookings are planned until early 2014. The first major test of the new facility will be in March 2014, with the Canadian Short Track Speed Skating Championships. This event is an official Canada Winter Games test event.
The project is said to be on time and on budget. A grand opening will be planned in early 2014, which will include user groups, major stakeholders, and the general public.
-Civic Centre Plaza Enhancement : It’s thought the full cost of the enhancement presented to the public ( The "River” design) would cost $1.2 million dollars. The City has committed $500 thousand, is looking for matching funding from the Canadian Heritage Legacy fund and NDIT has confirmed $30 thousand from its Community Halls and Recreation Facilities Grant program. The City is also looking for corporate sponsorship to cover the balance of the costs.

Sidewalks are for the moose and the deer?
oooh, now we can unleash the full capacity of our “global” logistics park? Hmm.. yeah thats right… we need to have more than one cargo jet land every 3 years ;-(
I wonder how many prospective customers IPG has for this industrial park.
No need to share the names of the companies. Just
1. prospective new companies to town and 2. prospective companies relocating from town
would be sufficient.
Consider it as a “progress report” to City Council on a quarterly or even half yearly basis.

Neat, two posts with the same time stamp on it.
Speaking of “logistics” people #1. In order for anything to land here we need fuel tanks …. which I think we have now, and we need something to stop for, as in picking up or dropping off cargo.
Without that we have a half assed development. So that is what we have had for the last 5 or so years.
So, the same as the requested progress report from IPG, I think council, and thus the community, should get at least a 6 month report on the state of the union with respect to prospective long haul cargo flights coming here.
These are our dollars ….. federal, provincial and local ….. that are going into this integrated project. So far there has been poor planning in putting a total package together. I wonder if that is continuing with procurement of customers.
Speaking of integrated …. we have all sorts of integrated RCMP units ….. where is our integrated development planning and implementation unit? Sure seems like it is missing in action for the last decade or so.
I think that we should keep in mind that this Global Logistic Park located on the West side of Boundry Road is a private park, and has nothing to do with the Airport. In fact the Airport advertises that they have 1000 acres available for future development ie; warehousing, distribution, maintenance.
So, who’s to say what type of business might locate in this park, and whether or not it will have any relation to the Airport??
The Airport Runway expansion began in 2007, and was opened for business by all the politicians, and other officials in Feb. 2009.
We can use the excuse that we are waiting for the fueling station, before we can expect any business, however this was never mentioned for the first 3 years after completion.
So in Feb. 2014 we will be five years without any significant business for this expenditure.
Perhaps we should have listened to Calgary who looked into a similar project years ago, and determined that it was not a good idea.
At least there is some progress. I also hope this will help reduce the big trucks going through town.
you build it, and they will come…… Still waiting.
Unless we get companies like Target, Canadian Tire or Walmart willing to make Prince George a distribution centre, with Mega wharehousing, its all a pipe dream to see the Airport land becoming anything more than a unkept field.

Great idea, but I couldn’t see it happening because IPG seems to not like to do this sort of thing, especially when the information is ‘less than rosy’. Just keep those tax dollars coming.
Palpou states; ” I think we should keep in mind that his Global Logistics Park, located on the West side of Boundary Road is a private park, and has nothing to do with the Airport.”
Hey palopu, do you work for the city? You do understand that this Global Logistics Park has EVERYTHING to do with the airport don’t you?
“The Global Logistics Park proponents say access to the properties for development will be available once the construction of Boundary Road is complete. That completion is set for this fall. They request that City Hall provide a tax exemption for the properties as an incentive for light industry , a tax break similar to that offered in Abbotsford at the airport there.”

Palopu, could you explain why all Global Logistics Parks are located next to airports?

Even the late great Tim McEwan contradicts your statement that the Global Logistics Park has nothing to do with the airport:
“The marketing plan presents a case for using the Prince George Airport not only for a tech stop for refueling, but as a logistics park. âThe land is ready and because the services have not yet been installed, there is flexibilityâ says Initiatives Prince George CEO Tim McEwan.”
What does the word “Global” mean to you palopu? To the rest of us it means it is connected to some form of global transportation hub. Hmm… now what would that transportation hub be that would connect that Logistics Park to the “Globe”. *scratches head*
I wish to add that all Global Logistics Parks are not just located next to airports, they can also be located next to “ports” as well, where shipping is used to transport goods globally.
People #1. There is a difference between having the statement **Global Logistic Park** on a website, and on a sign on Gunn Road, and an actual Logistics Park.
Perhaps you could give us some indication of just what these ***Logistics** would be.
In any event the so called Global Logistics Park is owned by someone named Rempel from Langley. The property is being sold by realtor Harry Backlin, and it was Backlin that approached the City for the tax exemptions. So you can see that the Airport itself is not involved in this venture.
My contention is that this so called logistics park is nothing more than a light industrial park that will take business from other industrial parks in the area, and any other business that comes knocking. Will some of this business be dependent on air services?? Perhaps, however at this point in time I would say that would be minimal.
The Airport itself would like to develop its own land so that they can take advantage of the revenue that would be generated.
Just for your information Prince George is not a Global Transportation Hub. In fact all we have is eight or ten flights a day to Vancouver, and one small flight to Calgary. Lets stick with the facts and get away from the hype.
