Your Look Inside the New RCMP Building

Saturday, November 16, 2013 @ 6:31 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The new Prince George RCMP Detachment building may have been officially “unveiled” today, but it is clear it will be several more weeks before the detachment can move  into the new space.

While spacious, and offering new facilities (such as an exercise room and a  lunchroom with kitchen), there is much to be done in the way of completing wiring, closing off the ceiling, and all the other finishing touches that will make the new facility  an inviting place to work. Click on the image above, or here, to see a video  of some of the features in the new building.

The  building will not only be home to the RCMP, but to some bylaw services from the City and Community Policing.  The Community Policing office at 6th and Brunswick will be closing and staff will be  moving into the new facility at Victoria and 5th.

The new building has improved facilities for handling and storage of evidence, project rooms where specific investigations can be the sole focus for investigators.

There will be improved ventilation for rooms where drugs are being stored as evidence to prevent  the odours from escaping.  In the existing detachment,  a major seizure of marijuana often results in the odour of the plants wafting throughout the building.

Most areas will only be accessible by security coded cards or fobs, and not everyone will have access to all areas.

There is a “parade room”, which is basically a large room where shift change briefings and media events can be held.

The new cell block has heated floors, and the individual cells are cinder block and a solid door, there are no bars.  The new modern cells will satisfy one recommendation that came from a Coroner’s inquest which examined the death of Cheryl Anne Bouey who took her own life while in a Prince George cell.

There are two secure vehicle bays to receive suspects.

There is plenty of storage space throughout the building for files, evidence, firearms, officer clothing and equipment.

The two floors are bathed in light from the central atrium, and most office space on the second floor has natural light from the windows.

The building could support a third floor should the need arise in the future.

“The building could support a third floor should the need arise in the future”

Not if the city does not properly maintain it and the lower floors crumble to dust and are consumed by mold and other shite like the Brunswick building.

Looking at it, there is no doubt that this building could be considered a tourist attraction. But what does that say for a community, when the best part about it becomes an RCMP Detachment?

This is all kind of sad really, what a waste of money on such unnecessary excess! Here is a picture of a more moderate, and just as functional, RCMP Station in Nanaimo, BC.

No one would ever guess that this is an RCMP Station, it looks more like a Centre for the Performing Arts, or some sort of real tourist attraction like a Modern Museum… o_O wow, just wow!

Most days the RCMP get to deal with crime, and accidents and all types of death from suicide, to accidents to murder.
Having a nice facility to work out of and come back to at the end of a shift should be something we as citizens are proud to say is there home away from home and reward for a good days work.
They as members are doing the job we pay them to do even if we happen to get tickets for breaking the law and want to blame them for what we have done.
Be proud not bitter
We don’t have to walk in there shoes, and most of us wouldn’t,even for the chance to be in the new facilities.

“The new cell block … the individual cells are cinder block and a solid door, there are no bars. The new modern cells will satisfy one recommendation that came from a Coroner’s inquest which examined the death of Cheryl Anne Bouey who took her own life while in a Prince George cell.”

It is too bad that it took this long for the cell blocks to be changed to provide better CCTV monitoring plus smooth surfaces to reduce the likelihood of suicide by hanging.

Cell blocks throughout the province were brought up to this standard about a decade ago. The new standard is only being introduced to this City when this building finally opens.

Umm… gus… better CCTV monitoring does not necessarily equate to better security monitoring for persons in holding cells at RCMP Stations:

“The three Kamloops Mounties and one city jail guard facing criminal charges after an alleged cellblock sex scandal last year have set dates for their preliminary inquiries.

Cpl. Rick Brown, constables Stephen Zaharia and Evan Elgee and city employee David Tompkins are each facing charges of breach of trust by a public officer.
It is alleged they watched two female prisoners engage in a sex act via closed-circuit TV in the holding cells at the Kamloops RCMP’s Battle Street detachment on Aug. 18, 2010.”

I understand myself, and this post, will be subject to attack and condemation by anonomous RCMP sympathizers on this blog, but there is a need to publicly state relevant “facts” and “truths”. I don’t like the fact that we are being fed way too much BS lately. IMO of course…

Wood and windows….should have made it out of coal and tar….that is the future here…

Just saying.

And as I shop at Northern Hardware at 2 pm on a thursday…I am fricking afraid to get out my vehicle as the trash literally surrounds my car and begs as I enter the store. I dont get this treatment south when I visit…In Mexico…no means no…they move on…these ppl are really scary and that is why I do not shop downtown. I would love to walk our streets freely, but no more, that scared the hell out me…never will I shop downtown again.

And A new, perfect RCMP building is 3 blocks away.

Where else do you think the southern city’s send there trash, here is a bus ticket get out of here.

This building is outwardly UGLY.What function does the pole barn structure facing Victoria St. perform?? shade? a replacement for beetle killed trees? What will be the maintenance costs on this OUTSIDE wooden structure??

“What will be the maintenance costs on this OUTSIDE wooden structure??”

Very little. It will rot away eventually. leaving only the inside ones standing.

Have a look at the wood siding on the Cancer clinic sometime. There are water stains on it already which shows the supporting structure behind. That suggests water problems from the backside of the wood.

“This building is outwardly UGLY”

It is designed by an architect who understood that o be famous like Frank Gehry one has to start the concept design on a paper napkin.

Well, he wiped the food off his mouth by accident with the napkin and the staff tried the best they could to figure out how the building was supposed to look. ;-)

I would not have give em .40 cents, for Scurge in Red..old building was good enuff for em.thanx Gus…I smile!!

Yes it looks ostentatious, and very pricey.
Having said that, the local constable on patrol had nothing to do with it, so treat them with respect. (Yeah, I know, a very few have problems)
When I think back to the detachment on 7th Ave., and the one they are currently in, growing pains moved them to larger buildings. Hopefully this one is designed with room to grow.
I’m very happy for these folks. They’ve been using a building that was never meant to house the staff they have now, bursting at the seams is an understatement. I for one am very pleased that the mounties who keep me safe have room to breathe, finally, been a long time coming. Good to see Commissioner Paulson made it out, one damn good investigator when in the ranks.

Well said Grizzly 1
