NDP Select New Party President

Sunday, November 17, 2013 @ 11:32 AM

Vancouver, B.C. – The BC New Democrats have   a new Party president.

Vancouver  City Councillor Craig Keating takes on the role,  defeating Jagrup Brar  at the Party’s Convention which is underway in Vancouver.

The Convention has yet to set the date for a leadership  convention to select  a replacement for Adrian Dix.

One of the other main tasks of the BC NDP Convention this weekend was to discuss what went wrong in the May 2013 provincial election.

A 5 member  review  panel  has  delivered it’s report having gathered input  from more than 3,000 Party members as well as  party leadership staff and MLAs.

While saying it was difficult to  find a single dominating  factor for the surprise loss,  Cindy Oliver  told convention  delegates the  campaign team mae a number of strategic mistakes.

The errors include:

1.The decision not to respond effectively to attack ads launched earlier in the year,

2. Failure to follow up on various scandals and gaffes committed by Christy Clark and the BC Liberals over the last 12 years.

3.  Favorable polls gave a false sense of security to the party and contributed to the idea that the NDP was “a party in waiting,” rather than an opposition party needing to wage a concerted fight to gain power.

Oliver noted that even the much vaunted NDP “ground game” needed to be overhauled and renewed, as well as its efforts to reach out to various ethnic communities.

At the conclusion of the session, the Provincial Executive of the Party submitted an emergency resolution to be voted on later in the proceedings calling for action and implementation of the panel’s recommendations.  The resolution called for a strategic planning and renewal process that engages constituency associations and party members “in the development of a plan and budget” to achieve victory in the next election.

And in other news the White Star Line have selected a new captain for the RMS Titanic:P

Watch out when “reaching out to various ethnic communities” – wasn’t that what the NDP claimed the Liberals were doing?

And what about Dix and the baggage that he brought with him from the Glen clark days?

The three reasons they have come up with are probably why we will loose the next election.
Cheers

Darrell Dexter just quit the NDP in Nova Scotia. Maybe he can come west to lead our Dippers here. He can partly commute on the direct flights to near the oil sands just like the majority of Maritimers do to get to Alberta to work and make money. Then take a connecting flight to Victoria. Keep the Dipper family more cohesive. Could work.

“One of the other main tasks of the BC NDP Convention this weekend was to discuss what went wrong in the May 2013 provincial election.”

I did not realize anything went wrong. The BCLiberals were re-elected. Everything must have gone right.

slinky: “Watch out when “reaching out to various ethnic communities” – wasn’t that what the NDP claimed the Liberals were doing?”

Yeah, they (and the media) tried to make it into a scandal, albeit a weak one.

People have a short memory when it comes to the Liberals. Between the BC Rail fiasco, Mill Closures, BC Hydro (PowerEx) settlement, Skimming money from Hydro, and ICBC to general revenue, Carbon Tax, and last but not least the HST.

The Liberals did not deserve to win the last election, and if the NDP had any idea on how to run an election campaign, they would have lost. However because of the NDP, the Liberals in fact won, and could very well win again in 2017.

The voters of BC were stuck with another term with conniving Liberals, or the NDP. Not really much of a choice, and that’s the problem in this Province.

We have unfettered business friendly Government, who has been in power far to long on the one hand, and the NDP who are basically nothing more than representatives for the BC Teachers Fed. CUPE, other Unions.

So we are stuck in a lose/lose situation. Had the NDP won, we could have survived them for four years, and perhaps got some concessions from the Liberals. As it now stands we have given the Liberals a green light to do what ever the hell the please.

Palopu, the election is over. Like you often said about the HST vote, suck it up and move on.

I agree with much of what you say Palopu. I don’t know if I would agree with the NDP representing anyone. They fight among themselves, run a stupid campaign and wonder why they lost. I think that they could have been a lousy gov’t that would get booted out after one term. I have no faith in the NDP.
But I am sick of the Liberals. Just to add to your list of reasons the Liberals are easy to dislike Palopu, is the BC Ferries Board: an unnecessary group of Liberal friends who get paid 40 to 50 grand a year, except for the chairman who gets 100 grand. The are responsible for the bonuses, which have now been hidden.

You say that as if the NDP would be doing something different.

Thats the problem with hindsight and a list like Palupos – would the list be any different under an NDP government? Possibly… If it was different, what would we be complaining about instead? A different set of scandals coupled with double digit unemployment and a stalled economy?
