Bobcats curb three year losing streak against Timberwolves
Prince George, BC – For the first time in three years the Brandon University Bobcats women's basketball team has entered the winning column. The Bobcats add their first win of the season moving to 1-6 after a 76-69 win over the UNBC Timberwolves. The Timberwolves fall to 3-4.
Four players hit double figures in as the Bobcats put an end to their losing streak.Third year guard Kaela Cranston (Winnipeg, MB) was on fire for the Bobcats. Cranston drained five threes and finished with 20 points. Cassie Cooke (Westminster, MD) turned it on late in the game scoring 17 second half points for a total of 19 during the game. Ambrea McDonald-Okoro (Regina, SK) chipped in 15 and Aleah Bridges (Berkeley, CA) added 10.
For the Timberwolves rookie Mavia Nijjer (Prince George, BC) was integral in the Timberwolves comeback in the fourth quarter. Nijjer was six for 10 from behind the arc, totalling 20 points. Fifth year guard Jen Bruce (Langley, BC) added 17 to the Timberwolves total.
Brandon took an early first quarter lead, forcing the Timberwolves to chase them. It wasn't until the final seconds that UNBC was able to tie the game at 19 apiece. Mercedes VanKoughnett (Prince George, BC) hit two shots from the foul line to tie up the game heading into the second quarter.
During the second period the Timberwolves appeared to come alive, outscoring the Bobcats 23-12. Jen Bruce gave UNBC its first lead only 20 seconds into the second. A few lead changes early on kept the home team on its toes but eventually the Timberwolves settled in and took control. Rookie guard Mavia Nijjer drained two threes with the second giving UNBC their largest lead of the game, 11 points, heading into halftime. At the break UNBC lead the Bobcats 42-31.
A fast paced running game pushed the Timberwolves to make unnecessary errors in their offence. The Bobcats forced eight turnovers in the third quarter alone. Starting out strong the Bobcats went on a 15-0 scoring run to open the third quarter, holding the Timberwolves scoreless until just under four minutes left in the period. Racking up at total of 27 third quarter points compared to the Timberwolves eight, the Bobcats regained the lead, 58-50, heading into the final ten minutes.
Late in the fourth Nijjer again hit the big shots for the Timberwolves. The rookie was able to drain a three to bring the Timberwolves within one point of the Bobcats at 69-67 with 2:44 to play. UNBC's efforts to regain the lead were thwarted by Kaela Cranston who answered Nijjer's three with one of her own. Cassie Cooke also took control to make sure her team produced on both ends. The third year guard pulled down 12 rebounds during the game, 10 of which were on defence stopping the Timberwolves from scoring any second-chance points. At the end of regulation time the Bobcats recorded a 76-69 win over the Timberwolves, their first win since February of 2010.
The Bobcats will travel to Calgary on Saturday to take on the Mount Royal Cougars, tipoff is set for 1 p.m. MST. The Timberwolves will host the No.6-ranked Regina Cougars at the Northern Sport Centre at 6 p.m PST. Both games can be viewed live at canadawest.tv
