Timberwolves hold on to fourth quarter lead to topple Bobcats
Prince George, BC – Timberwolves fans got their monies worth in a nail bitter between the UNBC Timberwolves and the Brandon University Bobcats. The Timberwolves, 3-4, defeated the Brandon Bobcats, 1-6, 85-81 Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre.
The Timberwolves came out with fire and energy against the Brandon University Bobcats. Charles Barton (Vernon, BC) was consistent throughout the game and finished with 20 points and seven boards. Barton wasn't the only forward working the key, Franck Olivier Kouagnia (Yaounde, CMR) scored a season high 17 points and added seven boards. When it was down to the wire its was Jeff Chu (Vancouver, BC) who helped keep the Timberwolves a float. Chu netted four fourth quarter foul shots to keep his time in it. The fourth year guard added 17 points for UNBC.
Kenonte Ramsey (Richmond, CA) finished as the high scorer for Bobcats with 20 points, almost half of which were fourth quarter points. Down the stretch Ramsey was the go to guy for the Bobcats and he kept them close while trying to fend off the UNBC comeback. Ramsey was followed closely by Emerick Ravier (Ottawa, ON) who added 18 points.
From the get-go the fans knew they were going to be in for an exciting game on Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre. Through the first half the Bobcats and the Timberwolves took turns taking the lead and trading points. Charles Barton threw down two dunks in the first half, one off a fast break the other a back cut. With the crowd behind them the Timberwolves marched their way to a narrow 47-42 lead at half.
The third quarter is where Brandon took charge. The Bobcats excelled at the transition game, moving the ball quickly down the floor. Ravier kept the Bobcats moving forward helping his team to hold the Timberwolves to 14 points. With only a three point lead after 30 minutes the Bobcats were not out of the water yet.
The Timberwolves battled to keep the game close, Jeff Chu was instrumental in making sure the Timberwolves scored when they needed to. With four minutes left to play Dan Stark (Prince George, BC) tied the game at 71 giving the Timberwolves another burst of energy. Down to the last two minutes, Ramsey drained a three for the Bobcats, giving them a solid 78-73 lead but it wouldn't last long as Kouagnia muscled his way inside to bring the Timberwolves within three. A quick steal on the inbounds by Chu led to Barton's third dunk of the game and a one point deficit for UNBC. After two missed possessions Chu hit from behind the arc, putting the Timberwolves up 80-78 with 45 seconds left in the fourth. Foul shots became the key at the end of the game, missed chances for the Bobcats left them wanting while Chu went 4/4 in the last 20 seconds to seal the deal for the Timberwolves. At the final whistle the Timberwolves finished ahead of the Bobcats 85-81.
The Bobcats travel to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal Cougars Sunday, November 24 at 3 p.m. MST. The Timberwolves continue their Canada West campaign Saturday night against the Regina Cougars, tipoff is set for 8 p.m. PST. Both games can be viewed live at canadawest.tv
