Cougars Cruise to an 8-3 Victory in Edmonton.
24 hours removed from a tough 3-0 loss in Calgary, the Prince George Cougars stormed back with arguably their most complete road effort of the season to date. Todd Fiddler had three goals and two assists, Troy Bourke and Chase Witala had two goals each and Brett Zarowny stopped 39 of the 42 shots he faced in goal en route to an 8-3 Cougars victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Cougars captain Troy Bourke opened the scoring 6:47 into the first off a rush from the right wing. Bourke maneuvered his way into the middle of the ice and blasted a shot past goaltender Tyler Santos for his 11th of the season.
35 seconds later the Cougars padded their lead when Chase Witala grabbed a rebound at the side of the Edmonton net, and slid one in from beside the Oil Kings goal.
Edmonton responded with a strong push, but Brett Zarowny turned aside all 15 shots that he faced in the first which ended with the Cougars ahead 2-0.
Early in the second the Cougars increased their lead to 3-0 and once again it was Witala supplying the offense. Witala had the puck along the left wing wall and fired a harmless looking shot towards the goal. The shot handcuffed the Oil Kings netminder, and Witala had his second of the night and his 16th of the season.
33 seconds later Todd Fiddler made it 4-0 with a shot from the high slot, and followed that effort up a few moments later with a goal off a shortbanded two-on-one rush.
Edmonton would eventually get on the scoreboard thanks to a power play marker from Brett Pollock, but the Cougars came right back with another shorthanded marker.
Troy Bourke’s second of the game and 12th of the season made the game 6-1 and also spelled the end of the night for Edmonton goaltender Tyler Santos.
16-year-old Patrick Dea replaced Santos and was tested with a number of quality chances. Dea made a great pad save off a Klarc Wilson breakaway, but on the same shift Wilson got the puck back, beat a defender to the outside and buried his second opportunity to make the game 7-1, which was how the second period ended.
Early in the third Edmonton got some offensive life when Aaron Irving took a pass from Edgars Kulda and snuck a puck past the Cougars netminder for his fifth of the season.
Prince George responded well though and were able to tack on one more goal thanks to Todd Fiddler’s power play marker. For Fiddler it was his second hat trick of the season, and his eighth goal in eight games since joining Prince George. It was the second five point game for Fiddler during the month of November.
Mitch Moroz would add a late goal for Edmonton to inch them a little closer, but after 60 minutes the Cougars prevailed with the 8-3 decision.
The Cougars finished the game one-for-seven on the power play while Edmonton went one-for-four. Despite their power play goal, the Oil Kings surrendered two shorthanded goals against.
Todd Fiddler, Troy Bourke, Klarc Wilson, Chase Witala, and Jordan Tkatch all had multi-point games, and Brett Zarowny earned his second victory in his last three starts. It was also the debut game for Cougars prospect Josh Anderson. The 15-year-old defenceman drew into the lineup for the first time and looked strong.
With the victory the Cougars improve their record to 10-14-1-3 and are now 2-2 in their last four games on the road. The Cougars will look to wrap up their Alberta swing with a victory tomorrow night in Red Deer.
