The corporate takeover of Canada continues; Rogers bought the Hockey Night in Canada theme song a few years back and now they own Hockey Night in Canada.
60 years of tradition⦠sold to the highest bidder⦠everything is for sale these days.

Uh, wasn’t it TSN (Bell Media?) that bought the HNIC theme song?
Otherwise, agree completely.

You are correct Krusty, it was TSN that bought the rights to Canada’s second national anthem… kind of a useless to them now, except maybe during the World Juniors.
As for Don Cherry… dance, monkey… dance!

I guess my hockey watching will be cut way back. There is no way I can sit through the crap that Rogers Sportsnet puts out.

It was TSN that bought the theme song, so Hockey Night In Canada and it’s theme song are still not reunited.
I agree with moose, I will be watching the odd Canucks game, that’s about it!
I am mature enough to understand that change happens, but changing 60 years of tradition is tough to swallow.

I still don’t like “our” Stanley Cup in the ol’ USA. IMO.

Lots of money changing hands and once again Canada is propping up Yankee teams. Each team to receive in the area of 14 million. Even those teams in the hockey hotbeds of the southern states. Bettman, the little, short lawyer,is naturally ecstatic. As for the Toronto Sports Network (TSN) I will not miss them. They don’t call hockey games, all they do is talk the whole time the game is on. Very little play by play. Perhaps we can manage to get rid of loud, big mouth Grapes and his eastern Canadian bias. Hockey Night in Canada is a national institution. I remember listening to Foster Hewitt on the radio from the gondola in Maple Leaf Gardens. So sad that a bit of Canadiana is being sold off to the benefit of mostly American businessmen. I hope that more junior hockey will be broadcast. I would definitely support the juniors. The put out a good brand of Canadian hockey. Just heard a young girl from Long Island butcher the Canadian anthem before an NHL game. Perhaps they could spend part of their 14 mil to purchase cue cards with the Oh Canada words on them.

Hockey advertising revenue was a huge money maker for the CBC. I suspect this will hurt the CBC product across the network including local news.
I also suspect without the CBC the NHL risks loosing tickets sales for Canadian teams at the club level. Maybe 2500 seats this contract would be worth to each team?
On the plus side maybe we can have Hockey Night in PG during the Canada winter games… Canadian entertainment the CBC can keep their advertising revenue from… advertising the likes PG could never afford to buy.
