Steelworkers and Canfor Revise Deal
Prince George, B.C .- The United Steelworkers Local 1-424 and Canfor have ironed out those issues which were the stumbling block to ratification of a new agreement. ( see previous story)
Union and management meetings yesterday resulted in Canfor withdrawing the call for a 5/10 shifting, and the competitive clause. The 5/10 shifting would have seen workers eligible for a day off in the middle of the week plus weekends, the current practice is to work 4, ten hour shifts and get three days off in a row.
The competitive clause would have seen Canfor workers take a reduced package if collective agreements at other companies were “less”. That clause has also been withdrawn.
There were some concerns expressed about seniority retention, and the agreement allows for a maximum of 24 months of seniority retention ( depending on years of service) in the event of a major layoff.
Local 1-424 President Frank Everitt says voting on the revised agreement is expected to take place over the next ten days, and results of the vote will be known before Christmas.
“We are recommending acceptance” says Everitt.

Well Mayor Green take notice, hope the hell snows 10 feet then she can start to shovel her own BS.
Proof that collective bargaining still works in the private sector. However, IMHO, the public sector collective bargaining system has been dysfunctional (especially at the provincial level) for the past 25 years.
Your right anotherside. There has been no effective bargaining by the Government or Government Unions over the past years.
At best it should be described as a **love in**
Government negotiator says *We can give you 5% Union negotiator says *Thank you, why don’t you take 5% for yourself while your at it*.
Government negotiator. *Why thank you, don’t mind if I do*
And on it goes.
keeps snowing like this there will be lots of love ins going on! SHARI SHARI baby, why cant you see what your doin to me.
Snow removal will be an essential service, as fire and police so those city workers arming the phones in dispatch and 911 will be working, as will the plows. There is no way LRB could say plowing is not an essential service
Give the working man 1800 -2000 hrs a year. Make the schedule out as if you were the one that is working the schedule.
There is more to life than work!
Keep these simple things in mind, and then the only issue should be wages and retirement package.
