Weather and Road Conditions, Recipe for Trouble
Prince George, B.C. – There is no shortage of incidents and crashes in the Prince George area today and the weather is playing a role.
The message from the RCMP is that unless you absolutely have to be on the roads today, stay at home.
On Winslow, in the Hart area, a pick up truck and transit bus “kissed” ( photo at right)
While at left, CN truck had some difficulty making the exit from 16 west to 97 north
As previously reported, tow trucks are working full out, and there are significant wait times for service because of the volume of calls.
City crews and contractors have already cleared some streets, and will continue to work through the night, although there is supposed to be more snow on the way.
The poor weather and road conditions have forced the postponement of at least one event in the City. The Prince George Cougars have postponed tonight’s Family Skate event .The Cougars say they will announce details as to the rescheduled date and time as soon as possible.

Winslow, if I remember correctly a transit bus slid off the road there last winter trying to make the corner.
Not sure where the city cleaning crews have been. I have been downtown twice today and have only seen a couple of YRB snow trucks. I haven’t seen one city plow truck yet.
Huh they are doing main roads and downtown in the evening.
Check the mayors road…bet you’ll find a plow!
Had to keep a medical appointment. Main roads are in extremely bad shape. City plow made one pass early in the morning on a main road but since then, nothing. The ruts are unbelievable. Worst effort in a long time. I suppose there is no money left in the budget or it has been allocated elsewhere.
:-(

My street was plowed today. I live near Westwood.
500 miles of roads. How many plows do you folks want? How much in taxes. We live in the north. I have seen the plows on the main roads and hills. That is their mandate when it is SNOWING.
Is anyone even surprised anymore? The snow removal in this city has been brutal for years. It’s embarrassing. Guess they are saving up so they have extra for the Winter Games snow removal so not a flake is on the road when the games are on.
People just need to use some common sense and stay off the damn roads and let the crews do their jobs. There is no where you need to be that is so damn important that you need to risk life and limb.
Seamut has it right. The City is 122 square miles, with approx. 500 miles of road, so when we get conditions like this, we have to at the very least give them 24 hours to make a dent in the snow.
Afer 48 hours the bitching should start in earnest, however at this point in time it is just a waste of time and effort.
If it keeps coming down there will be a lot of people who will not be getting to work to-morrow.
“we have to at the very least give them 24 hours to make a dent in the snow.
Why? Cities that have proper and sufficient equipment to remove snow do not have these problems.
Forget about cleaning the ends of driveways during a storm. Take a different attitude and protocol and it can actually be done.
Learning from others is long overdue in this city.
“CN truck had some difficulty making the exit from 16 west to 97 north”
Why? That is highways. Why are they having problems with the roads?
Absolutely no problems coming home from Burns Lake today, they had a skiff of snow last night, but very good wet highway conditions @ 95 to 100 km/ hr right through Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof.
Get about 20 kms the other side of Bednesti right through to PG its 70 km to 80 km per hour. Driving into Prince George it was like a different world from spring into snow-magedon.
Be safe out there people!
Had to go up Cranbrook hill twice this morning, no plowing at all, very surprised, but not as surprised as the guy in front of me going too damn fast in to the curve, I guess he thought sideways was fun, but not for me. Ospika was nuts, people just won’t learn to slow down and grab a thing called patience and let it tag a long awhile.
Wonder if Foothills on the hill was plowed.
“Learning from others is long overdue in this city.”

Unfortunately, I think most people at City Hill in PG are under this bizarre belief that winters back home are worse than anywhere else in Canada or parts of the US. Because of this, I think they truly believe that there is no opportunity to learn from anyone else.
Ignorance truly is bliss!
axman – some people don’t have a choice about travel in the winter. Some people have to go to work … you know where they earn money to pay the taxes to maintain essential services.
Apart from the safety angle, one would think the city would at least consider that the economy is based on people getting to work and therefore make road clearing a TOP priority.
