New Campaign Launched to End Gang Life

Wednesday, December 11, 2013 @ 3:34 PM

Burnaby, B.C. – The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) has launched a two year, edgy campaign,  designed to convince people to  steer clear, or  step away from gang life.

The  Province wide  gang prevention  campaign is called End Gang Life.  It uses posters,  television and  radio ads   which  CFSEU hopes will spark conversation, and will hopefully give youth a fresh perspective on what gangs really are, give communities a rallying point around which they can mobilize against gangs in their neighbourhoods, and make gangsters pause for a second thought about their life choices.

"This campaign represents a critical step in the evolution of B.C.’s relentless fight against gangs and organized crime," said Justice Minister Suzanne Anton. "The messages are engaging, clear, and simple yet powerful. They will reach those with loved ones who are involved in gangs and organized crime, and foster important conversations that may help those young people to stay away from, or get out of,  gang life. That’s critical to reducing the street violence that continues to threaten public safety in many B.C. communities."

The campaign will be targeting everyone from youth, parents, siblings, peer groups, members of communities across B.C., and gang members and their friends and families – because gang violence and organized crime affects everyone.

"Even though gang-related murders are at some of their lowest levels in recent years, even one murder is one too many and that is why we think there is no better time than now to create and release British Columbia’s most comprehensive, engaging, and impactful anti-gang public service announcement media campaign in this province’s history," says Chief Superintendent Dan Malo, Chief Officer for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia. "It is time that mothers and fathers stop having to arrange for their child’s funeral and no family should have to grieve for the loss of their loved one because of gang violence."

The launch of the campaign also includes the launch of a special website, where  a number of anti-gang resources can be  found.

Ads and the like will be do very little in my opinion. The justice system needs to start punishing offenders with real sentences, instead of these slaps on the wrist. A 6 month sentence is no deterrent against the lure of money, power and women. How many times will we see someone do a violent crime and it turns out they were known to police and had been arrested many times before? Yet, they are still out there on the streets because of lax laws and judges who won’t do anything to keep them off the streets.

Maybe our justice system should stop wasting taxpayers dollars and simply lock these scumbags up and keep the rest of us safe like they should.

I’m up for anything that gets teens and young adults away from gangs. Hope this helps.

Thumbs up Grizz, you have to start young with kids to drive the point home. Both my parents and my siblings all smoked like chimney’s, only thing that kept me away from the almighty cig was the cancer programs at my school growing up. Never having smoked I can smell the stuff almost a block away including the wacky stuff

slinky: “Both my parents and my siblings all smoked like chimney’s, only thing that kept me away from the almighty cig was the cancer programs at my school growing up.”

My parents smoked as well, but I didn’t need cancer programs to figure out smoking was bad. The smell and the filth was enough for me not to start.

I too agree with Grizzly1. We have to encourage our youth to stay away from people who could get them into trouble.
