Interim Essential Service Levels Set.. For Now
Prince George, B.C. – The Labour Relations Board of BC has put together an interim order for essential services if CUPE locals 399 and 1048 should opt for strike action.
The union locals could legally strike as of 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
The interim order places, snow removal, waste water treatment, water distribution and two emergency crews ( one for possible water or sewar line breaks the other for repairs to vehicles in the City`s fleet) as essential services in the event of job action.
The order could change though, as there will be more talks on the specifics again next week.
If there is a strike, it would be the first time CUPE has had to resort to this kind of job action in order to press their contract demands with the City of Prince.

says a lot for how the city manager is doing his job. The management gets more staff and they contract out their jobs. Why so many managers?
Well the city manager isn’t doing the people of Prince George any favors, she needs to start listening to the actual people who pay her (the tax payers). The Mayor needs to get her head out of where ever it is and listen to the folks who voted her in (likely that isn’t going to happen any time soon). The high priced lawyer from Vancouver who is contracted to assist in the bargaining isn’t helping matters any either.
So what happens to all the bookings at CN Centre, hockey games, and other events at the civic centre? Who’s going to look after or rebook all these things? The Counsel and Mayor rush in, where smart people would work things out, and play smart ass with the union. Mean while vacation plans and flight bookings need to be cancelled due to the needless pig pigheadedness of the elected officials.
This will be a gong show worth watching.
You mean they are not on strike yet? Been living here a few years now, thought they’d been on strike the hole time?
” the hole time”
hahahahaha…………
I would love the press to ask Mayor Green and her side kick Beth James to comment on the promise of 20hrs. of overtime that will be a bonus on managements pay checks as a token of appreciation for helping out when the union workers go on strike. In a private meeting she held with them last week telling them they would work 4 extra hours a day and get paid double time. There is no way management will be working till 9pm. They will get the over time pay no matter what time they go home. Another waste of the tax payers money! With a raise in January and bonus check with a strike…..the rich just get richer at our expense! Hall and Skakun time to make a move!
Going to take a lot more than 80 grand for Green to get re-elected next year. Not sure she has the mental capability to comprehend the disaster she has been in the mayor’s chair.
Maybe a 1 way ticket to help out her twin in China would solve our problems.
Is there any truth to the double OT pay for supervisors and managers? Really….. what kind of incentive is there for our City Officials to come to an agreement with the City Workers if they get paid that kind of extra cash? I agree with betterpg, a few may put in a full days work (plus 4), but others will be booking out right after their boss leaves.
Who pulls Greens puppet strings?
All this not so merry negativity just in time for the Holiday Season!
John pulls Greens puppet strings. Thought everyone knew that! Soon we can say we’re a twin city with Detroit.
Being that the city is in financial difficulties and in the middle of a labor dispute with its workers: I ask myself is it really about the money? ” And the workers will not accept the Zero mandate. ” I wonder if the Management and Council gave back their 2013 raises if the workers would accept the zero for 2013?
gman you have offered up the perfect solution. Ben would you be able to turn this into a poll question on the site?
Maybe you two didn’t read the earlier article where it stated management didn’t get any increases in 2013.
Management may have stated they did not get any raises but someone needs to ask them if anyone got any bonuses….
this city needs to find some real leaders. The Beth and Sherry gong show needs to stop. Management wages are out of control.
We have two many managers, get rid of the dead wood. The union work force is getting smaller and is being replaced with contractors that are more expensive and are profit driven. the union work force cares about the quality of the work and do a great job.
Lets all remember this turmoil created by councils vision. I hope the good councillor’s make a move soon or the may be down the road this next November with the Green team
How is snow removal an essential service? I can see if it is on bus routes but on local streets. In Grande Prairie and other Alberta cities that I’ve been in they don’t even do the side streets so how is it an “essential service” here?
Too much money is wasted cleaning the side streets anyway. My truck plows through even the heavy stuff like today so save the money and cut the service. It an’t essential!
betterpg where is your confirmation of this double OT drivel??!! Sounds like total BS to me. The only people that have the authority to grant that type of thing is City Council and thats a fact. Making stuff up to try and further incite distruct is completely counterproductive.
It’s somewhat ironic that the Union feels completely OK about negotiating in the media for the past six months but when the City does it then it’s unfair bargaining.
The union says its not about money for months but then when it revealed it is about money they cry foul for letting the taxpayer know.
Now that the snow removal hammer has been taken away by the essentsial services designation it should get interesting as the bargaining power has hugely shifted.
Let the games begin….seen this script before from both sides and no one wins. A couple weeks on the picket line should smarten both sides up.
