Stay Clear of Peden Hill

Friday, December 20, 2013 @ 12:03 PM

Priince George, B.C.-  RCMP in Prince George are  issuing a double advisory about Peden Hill.

First,  members of the general public are advised to avoid this  route because  tractor trailer  units  are stuck on the hill.

Secondly,  semi and logging truck  drivers are advised that  if they do not properly prepare their rigs by  putting chains on their tires,  they  will be ticketed. The RCMP say it is  not only a safety factor as the big rigs are  getting stuck on the hill which is  having a negative impact on  the general public.

Why does this keep happening? Professional truck drivers should know this hill or, at the very least, be able to judge the hill (it is pretty steep when you look at it from the Costco perspective).

The first thing that you need to consider is that the chain up area at the bottom of the hill is way too small. When you’re in there putting on chains you are exposed to traffic and drivers who really don’t care. They need to make a proper area so truckers can put on their chains safely.

repost from FFFA- did not see this thread till after I posted.

When are they going to start making some chip truck drivers start wearing a “L” placard on the back on the truck. Beige one putting his chains on a corner half way up Peden Hill. Smarter one, but not by much, putting his on in the decel lane to Mohawk instead of the area provided.

Oh and road looked like it was plowed and sanded not long before and he still spun out.

the province needs to put an overpass at the bottom near Cowart and then there could be a much more gradual grade up the hill. They have spent how many billion dollars improving highways in the lower mainland (ie Port Mann Bridge) and soon more billions for a new bridge to replace the Deas Island Tunnel.

Surely they can put a few million aside to fix the dam highways inside our city limits. Twinning between here and Cache Creek is nice but really from a priority basis the highways inside the city should rank higher. Fix Peden Hill then get rid of the lights on highway 97 so that the big rigs can drive safely and more efficiently through the city.

Its the same thing that happens time and time again with 2 semi drivers side by side taking up both lanes on the bypass.
They block traffic all the way back.
Learn to use the right hand lane.

Uh, oh…looks like that guy spun out. Well..I’m pretty sure I can get around him. Holy mackeral! its really slippery right there! Shucks… now I’ve got the whole road blocked….

“Why does this keep happening?”

Because YRB isn’t doing what is required to keep the hill plowed and sanded according to the conditions that currently exist.

“Oh and road looked like it was plowed and sanded not long before and he still spun out”

Probably got cutoff by a 4 wheeler.

Gotta love all the armchair truck drivers that comment on the internet.

There is no “trucks must chain up here” regulations or signs for Peden Hill. Good luck ticketing drivers that don’t and have the ticket stick.

Even you have to admit, Dragon, that stereotypically truckers can be a pretty arrogant, competetive bunch. Flip on the radio and you will hear. Two trucks will get stuck on a hill and a third one will say “tell those idiots to stand clear, I’m comin through!!”

Reminds me of the joke about the truckers who come to an underpass with a sign that says “maximum height 2.6m”. One says: “Well, our truck is 2.7m. We’ll have to go around.” But the other responds: “Nah, there’s no cops around. Let’s go for it!”

This happens every year and yes YRB does as little as possible to meet there contract thus ending up with a bundle at the end of their year. As I said last year that road could be kept open with just one plow truck with a sander—plow and sand going up, plow and sand going dowm then repeat as necessary. Do you know why the Pine Center parking lot is smooth and cleaned—- Yes the plow it. Yrb has graded Otway once this year as compared to Highways which use to plow every snow fall and grade every Sunday night if needed. They do not even plow the bus routes after a 6″ snowfall and if you call in you will be told they are meeting their contract obligations so I quess it is not their fault.

===================================

That’s seems far too simple restjet, there must be more to it than that, LOL.

Maybe they should send YRB managers to China the next time they go to see how our sister city does it.

Wow there are alot of road engineers and contract procurement experts on here!!

My favourite one from just the other night on Malaspina going down hill to boot!

So what ever money they save, YRB gets a good size bonus or what? Gee, it’s a good thing money means more then lives.

Stop being a trucker apologist dragon. We,ve all seen some boneheaded drivers. Ya, passenger vehicles have more than their share of idiot drivers but truckers are supposed to be “professional”

I still question the hiways out west with all the truck traffic. They have these trucks stopping for a red light at the bottom of peden hill, and after they get moving and gain some momentum another red light at Domano and Tyner, then again after some more momentum a red light at the top of the hill by Westgate and the fire hall. An incline of this magnitude should be a straight shot albeit with a speed limit. Shame on hiways for letting this happen

YRB took the contract to make money by not plowing they make money. There is no incentive to go above and beyond that just lowers their bottom line. They should be getting paid for Km plowed not Km covered in contract.

When you get paid to do something you are considered to be a “professional”. It has nothing to do with how good you are at it although one would hope that after 50 hours a week behind the wheel that they are better drivers than your average joe.

They should get tickets if they don’t chain up in bad road conditions just like the person heading down the highway with summer or bald tires. They are putting other lives at risk not just their own.

I would bet the chip truck driver gambled that he would catch a green light at Cowart Road and would have enough speed built up to make it up the hill. Laziness plain and simple. CVSE and RCMP were there so hopefully lightened his wallet.

CVSE should be sitting at the bottom of the hill in this weather and enforcing a mandatory chain up. I’d rather take a one lane closure and the congestion that comes with it over the hill being closed completely to traffic.

This is not the first truck today to spin out on Peden Hill today.

There was a tanker truck around 11 am this morning.

The chip truck was spun out after that. There must have been 2 police cars and a CVS? pickup at that time.

A logging truck decided he was going to pass the chip truck and either hit it or one of his reefers just fell off the truck as it was leaning against the chip truck.

Lightened his wallet for what? Do yo see a flashing sign at the bottom of the hill that says “Trucks must chain up here”?

I drove chiptrucks through 3 winters in this town. Climbed Peden Hill 13 times a week and never spun out. You know why?Because the hwy was plowed and sanded almost every time it needed to be. When it wasn’t I was skilled enough to get up the hill on my own. Even when lifting off from the lights at the bottom. Chains, what are those? I chained up once, when I spun out in a parking lot.

peegee, the only time trucks spin out on Peden Hill is when the contractor is not doing the job properly. The hill coming east up out of Vanderhoof is looked after perfectly most of the time. Never seen a truck spun out there and it’s steeper than Peden.

“Chains, what are those? I chained up once”

You still have truck driver mentality just like the guy on the hill this morning!

I must say a bigger chain up area would definately help to get some guys to chain up. Four wheelers don ‘t give a crap how fast they go and how close they go to us chaining up. How do i know? I was hit by a car my first time ever having to chain up. I stil chain up when i need to though

That CN Intermodel truck was actually spun out and Jack knifed on Domano trying to get in/out of Save On, then he chained up and came down to Malaspina, in that picture he actually was chained up when that happened, just got caught in the ruts.

that chain up lane only holds 3 trucks, 15 minutes to chain up, do the math, not a wonder they run it, trucks would be backed up to Mr PG if every truck stopped to chain up, no thought put into it, salt the hill before and during snowfall quickest, simplest, safest.

I agree will all who said of needing a larger and more safe chain up area. Can’t get anymore than one truck in what’s there now, not to mention how close you are to traffic. I know that I like going home at the end of the day and don’t feel like getting wiped out by some holiday shopper in too much of a rush. Need for a PROPER chain up area is a 100% MUST!

That CN Intermodel truck was actually spun out and Jack knifed on Domano trying to get in/out of Save On, then he chained up and came down to Malaspina, in that picture he actually was chained up when that happened, just got caught in the ruts.

then it sped down malaspina into the new neighbourhood

“You still have truck driver mentality just like the guy on the hill this morning!”

And you haven’t a clue about driving a truck. So why bother flappin your lips about something you really know nothing about?

“That CN Intermodel truck was actually spun out and Jack knifed on Domano trying to get in/out of Save On, then he chained up and came down to Malaspina, in that picture he actually was chained up when that happened, just got caught in the ruts”

Actually he was trying to turn right on Prince Edward but couldn’t make the turn, then he tried to swing back onto Malaspina. That didn’t work either.
His chains were worn out singles.

Sorry Dragon, ewitt nailed it. Why can’t you acknowledge there are idiot truck drivers out there? The truck driver invincible mentality is alive and well… until they screw up for all to see.

Blaming the plow and sanding vehicles because trucks spun out and got stuck on Peden hill is weak, and even you Dragon have to admit that.
