In five years they’ll be lucky to have jobs.
So they might as well get while the getting’s good. That’s the BC Liberal way, isn’t it?
sometimes its not always about money, its the way companies treat employees. Sometimes they want to send a message and this is the only way.
Would be nice to see what kind of increases they got over the five years, just to see how it stacks up against other increases in the past year.
Seems long term contracts are becoming the norm. Longshoreman signed an eight year contract a while back.
The non-union place I work for is getting 3% in the new year.
Socredible: “So they might as well get while the getting’s good. That’s the BC Liberal way, isn’t it?”
You say that as if it’s something new or it would be different under any other government. lol.
Production workers – 3%,2%,2.5%,2.5%,3%
Trades – $0.50 each year plus the same percentages
Cash paymentsâ$400 in the first year, $1,000 in both the third, fourth and fifth year.
It wouldn’t be, Johnny. Not under any of the choices we have now. The jobs will disappear anyways, regardless of whether they get an increase in pay or not. The timber supply is shrinking, and who ever heard of any company modernising to employ ‘more’ workers? Look at the statistics, how many are employed in mills now compared to years past. Used to be 1,000BF per man/day was what was needed for a mill to be viable. What’s it up to now, 5,000BF per man/day? Or more?
socredible: “who ever heard of any company modernising to employ ‘more’ workers?”
It’s called ‘change’ and ‘adaptability’. There are industries that employ people today that didn’t exist in the past. There are also occupations today that didn’t previously exist. Similarly, certain jobs aren’t as much in demand or get phased out by technology. Welcome to the modern world.
“The agreement is a five year deal that provides a signing bonus, wage increases as well as cash payments in the third fourth and fifth years.”
How odd that everyone seems to think that THAT kinda $ being offered employee’s is Ok…..but ALL expect City Tradesman and workers to accept 0% 0%??! Oh right….its cuz of the “Its MY tax dollars excuse!” Hogwash, everywhere ya look Unions are negotiating fair deals, but this City and its Pompous Dictator…er Mayor, insist that NOTHING for 3 years sounds about right!
“The non-union place I work for is getting 3% in the new year.” That sounds about right. But remember if it comes down to City Workers just bash them as much as possible lol
Let me assure you Crys, that tax dollars are not hogwash, nor are they infinite.
The old union rhetoric of ‘so and so got x%, so I should get the same!’ is the real hogwash.
“That sounds about right. But remember if it comes down to City Workers just bash them as much as possible lol”
I think if a person comes on 250 snivelling and coming off like they are entitled to everything that person should be bashed.
As I stated before CrysBaron, stop it. You are embarrassing your union brothers and sisters. I know all city employees are not like you because I know a bunch of them.
CrysBaby, oops I mean CrysBaron, it would be interesting to know what the Steelworkers received in their last contract and in previous contracts Did they ever have a year where they got 0%? Did they ever suffer from any wage rollbacks? Did they ever give up any benefits or go through any other concessions?
Our Municipal workers just came off of a very very generous contract! 16% cumulative over 5 years at a time when inflation for the same period was something like only 8%!
According to something that I recently read, our municipal workers have enjoyed a wage increase each and every year for the past 30 years! That’s 30 years with a wage increase each and every year!!
To suggest that our City workers are hard done by would be a real stretch of the imagination! Many of us have gone a year or two here or there without wage increases! Most people didn’t get anything close to 16% over the past 5 years! Some people lost their jobs and others suffered lower incomes, all while our Municipal workers enjoyed wage increases year after year after year over the past 30 years!!
It is not unreasonable to ask or even demand that our municipal expenses, wages of which are a very large part, are held in check for a change!!
You might call that whining and complaining, but I call it asking for a break in ever increasing tax increases! We deserve a break!!
Hart Guy
Please remember who’s pay checks support your employer which in turn generates your pay check. Just think about how many Jobs each 45K + per year salary creates in our local economy. A point for you to ponder.
Middlefinger, your IQ is a testament to the PG population, you know NOTHING of me yet address me as a UNION member LOL! Your a sniveling twit anytime the City of PG is mentioned so by YOUR logic, enjoy your Christmas party with the Upper management and Mayor and Council!!
“According to SOMETHING that I recently read, our municipal workers have enjoyed a wage increase each and every year for the past 30 years! That’s 30 years with a wage increase each and every year!!
Wow, You read SOMETHING and it said this and that….Yep, take that as 100% Fact, you read SOMETHING from the City spin Doctors and its now fact. Do you work at the Mayors store?
CrysBaron….your maturity level is outstanding. I hope for the sake of the CUPE members that you are not on the bargaining team. Hey Crys, are you Crys S or Crys B ? ’cause if you are one of the two, I know how much you make and how little you do for a paycheque.
LOL You truly are a Mental Midget, I don’t even belong to CUPE Simpleton! But rave away…its very entertaining!! And seeing how I don’t even Work for the City of Prince George you don’t have a clue how much I make. Its twits like you that assume ANYONE who actually is in favor Of or supports what the City workers are fighting for HAS to be IN THE CITY AND CUPE….seriously, your operating at a Grade 4 level.
raresense, your comment suggests that you are completely oblivious to the fact that many in our community do not make anything close the the salaries and benefits that the unionized workers in this community do!
For whatever reason, not everyone is fortunate enough to have landed a job at the pulpmills or sawmills. Not everyone is fortunate enough to land a government job, or a job at the University, College or with the city.
But regardless of their workplace and their income level, they have no choice but to pay taxes to the city if they are fortunate enough to be able to own a home in the city. Many of these people have not had raises every year for the past 30 years. Many have not enjoyed a 16% wage increase over the past 5 years. Some are living on fixed incomes and are living on retirement or disability incomes.
I am sure that many of these people would like a break from the never ending tax increases. I’m also pretty sure that most of these people couldn’t care less about how many jobs are created by the spending of our very well paid municipal workers!
Your statement is absolutely ridiculous, but let me try to get it straight…..we should all be thrilled to be paying higher municipal taxes so that our municipal workers can have the ability to go out in our community and spend, spend, spend so that the rest of us can have a job, even if it’s at a salary and benefit level that is far beneath that of the municipal worker??
Wow, we should all be supporting even greater wage and benefit increases for our municipal workers. Now all we have to do is jack up our taxes some more!! I’ll bet Grandma and Grandpa on a fixed income will be just flipping thrilled to death by that!
So, raresense, which Union do you belong to??
Thanks for staying up late and sharing more of your infinite wisdom Crys. I sincerely hope you really don’t work for the city because I would hate to think our taxes are paying a complete idiot like you.
I can’t really think of any job you would be suited for. The whiny Town Crier maybe.
Hey this is fun CrysS.
Oh, Crys….if it wasn’t for the union, would you have a job at all ? You sound like someone that needs to be protected. One of those crazy hot head types. Do you still think I no nothing of you ?
First you said you worked in a sawmill, now you say you’re not union. Hmmm….a sawmill manager that is totally passionate about the CUPE union. You better go sit on throne and pinch one off Crys. The BS is oozing out of you.
