Red Nose Keeps on Rolling

Monday, December 23, 2013 @ 11:26 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Another  busy weekend for Operation Red Nose.

The free  service that gets party goers and their vehicles home  safe and sound, provided 230 safe rides home on Dec. 20 and 21.

On Friday, 71 volunteers that included 18 road teams, offered 82 safe rides home, travelling 2,373 km.

On Saturday,, 87 volunteers that included 26 road teams, provided 148 safe rides home, travelling 3,673 km.

"Overall, we are very happy with how the weekend went. Anyone who wanted a safe ride home, received one since we had enough teams to keep up with the demand," said Andrea Johnson, Operation Red Nose spokesperson.

The RCMP were visible around the city with rolling road checks throughout the weekend. They even took the time to recognize Operation Red Nose for helping keep the roads safe.

"On Friday night, an RCMP officer pulled over one of our teams right in front of our headquarters at ICBC," said Johnson. "The team was not on a ride and those who witnessed it, wondered what was going on. When the team returned to headquarters, the volunteers explained the RCMP just wanted to congratulate us for doing what we do. That was very generous of the officer to do that and we appreciate their continuous support of our program."

So far in 2013, Operation Red Nose has provided 793 safe rides home after eight nights of service.

Operation Red Nose won't be in service Dec. 27 and 28 to give their volunteers a much-needed break and enjoy the Christmas season prior to our busiest night, Dec. 31 New Year's Eve.

"We still need volunteers for New Year's Eve and anyone who want to help us out must submit their application, which includes a Criminal Record Check, by Dec. 24," said Johnson. "Volunteers can apply online at www.ornpg.ca, fill out the application and drop it off at the Community Policing Office."
