Major splash factor as vehicle drives through "puddle" in Prince George – photos 250News

Prince George, B.C. –  It seems there are several new small  lakes in Prince George  as the storm water catch basins can’t cope with the big melt that’s been happening in the City.

“We have every available  person  working on trying to clear the catch basins” says City of Prince George’s  Superintendent of Operations, Bill Gaal.

The worst spot in the City seems to be in front of the YMCA on Massey Drive.

Drivers are reminded to slow down as they approach one of the watery sections, not only to prevent drenching   pedestrians who may be walking nearby, but to prevent the splash from  causing  loss of  visibility for  oncoming  vehicles and to prevent vehicles from stalling in the middle of the “puddle”.

Get use to this Prince George, not just in December, but January and February! This is how our winters are ,and will be, over the next decade.

After the next decade… all bets are off!!!

will the YMCA have a huge rain runoff water utility bill to cover this?

I’ve seen a few cars with hydraulic engine damage too, after trying to drive through deep puddles in the past. Expensive fix!

I have noticed that when and if the snow is cleared that the catch basins are often blocked by the piled snow on the sides of the roads. The low spots should be well known by City crews. In fact, they should be noted on their GPS/GIS data maps and they could be checked for preventative (prevention of puddles forming) maintenance rather than leaving them for reactive maintenance.

The weather has been relatively consistently warm now for a couple of weeks and there is virtually no reason for catch basins which may have been frozen to freeze again once thawed.

Unless someone can describe to me how they freeze again when the overnight temps have been hovering one degree plus or minus around the 0C mark, they are not getting the runoff due to blockage at the surface.

There are so many reasons why snow should be cleared properly and in a timely matter, aren’t there.

If you drive like the person depicted in the left hand picture above, you deserve whatever car problems come up as a result.

The right picture isn’t much better.

Sure crazy back east. Extremely low temperatures breaking records with very strong blizzards. Makes our mild temperatures look down right balmy.

With engine air intakes now generally behind the grill vehicles are now more susceptible to water entry to the engine destroying it. When carburetors where king the air intake was on top of the engine thus up higher, less risk of water ingress to the engine.

gus, you are so right about the roads being cleared properly andf in a timely manner.

I personally hope that ICBC includes the City of PG in a lawsuit (from a car accident within city limits) due to these roads.

The roads are incredibly bad and a danger to anyone who tries to use them, whether it be walking or driving.

Shame on the City of PG and their stupid decision to not clear roads!!!!!

Gus is correct. If the City kept the drains cleared from the get go, this water would run off.

Perhaps they are trying to show a need for the Storm Water Utility. Actually we don’t need a Storm Water Utility. We need someone to clean the drains.

For PG its all about finding ways to tax us, and very little about actually solving problems.

Yes thats it Palopu…..its a Giant conspiracy to TAX TAX TAX YOU, no one is working hard enough for the city, or long enough, or in the right spot for you and I suspect they never will. The roads are atrocious, was in Quesnel on the weekend and they were JUST AS BAD, right down to their main street Reid Street, was like driving over mogules….perhaps its a Municipal wide conspiracy…Hummmm!

So which department do you work at the City, knowledge88? If it’s not you, you must have a lot of family that works there.

I have cleared the drain on my corner myself, imagine that.

Yes, your Colombo JohnnyBelt lol you have the same mind frame as Palopu….if your proud of where you live and DON’T bash the City workers…well, you MUST therefore work for them!! Try again Sherlock, I dont work for the City, in fact dont even know anyone that works for the City, but I have an opinion that is contrary to yours so feel free to Jump right to that conclusion lol.

@Knowledge88, I’m just trying to figure out why questioning the effectiveness of City services, and the high cost of City workers wages and benefits automatically qualifies as ‘bashing’. I would also question why you seem to jump down the throat of anyone who does.

Do you not pay enough taxes? Do you not demand accountability of the City to manage our money wisely, from the top management right on down to every front line worker? Do you not agree that public sector wages and benefits are out of control and that the last deal achieved by CUPE was rich and beyond what most in the private sector got over the past five years?

So you say you don’t work for the City or don’t know anyone who does. For someone who supposedly doesn’t, ‘Thou dost protest too much’.

Again, your spot on Colombo! let me address your clear insight as facts,

A- “Do you not pay enough taxes?”

In fact I think the taxes I pay Are fair as opposed to Kelowna where I used to live, there in lies your problem,, you think you should get some sort of tax break cuz you live in the north? Perhaps I make more money than you and just dont see the problem as Horrendous as you do….perhaps you need to go back to school and get a better paying job so Taxes dont bother you so much….and seeing how its #1 on your mind, where exactly do YOU work?

B- “Knowledge88, I’m just trying to figure out why questioning the effectiveness of City services, and the high cost of City workers wages and benefits automatically qualifies as ‘bashing'”

Its not the questioning I have an issue with, its the CONSTANT aim at the unionized workers that I have an issue with, there no more lazy than your average mill worker with a grade 10 education so give it a rest with the “bashing”…and thats YOUR word, I would use straight out hate and contempt given some of the posts folks like you and Palopu constantly make.

C-“Do you not agree that public sector wages and benefits are out of control and that the last deal achieved by CUPE was rich and beyond what most in the private sector got over the past five years?”

Actually, NO, I dont agree lol Where are your facts for this? I just saw Canfors deal with signing bonuses and a hefty increase.I will use your logic and assume your just one of the guys that tried to get on with the city, couldnt, and now you hate that they actually make a decent wage. I know what Pulp mill workers make, Arrow truck drivers etc. This arguement that Private Sector wages are so much lower than Public sector wages simple doesnt hold water. Your blaming people for getting a good paying job, look in the mirror if it annoys you, and maybe dust off your resume.

You question why I “Jump down the throat of anyone who questions city services”…..well, boo hoo, get used to it cuz if you and that mouthpiece Palopu can come on here day after day bashing the City for every little thing, I mean grow up, there doing the best they can with what they have…..if your gonna bash em everyday, then get used to seeing my retort. As for your “Thou dost protest too much”…..that would apply to your constant whining about anything city related as well…Or are YOU part of City management…Hummmm lol

Knowledge88, I applaud you !!

The future of 250 blog is Knowledge88… And the future looks good!!

Knowledge: “You question why I “Jump down the throat of anyone who questions city services”…..well, boo hoo, get used to it “

I’m very used to people like yourself who can’t stand it when someone has a different view from their own.

The bottom line is, CUPE doesn’t care what they cost the taxpayer, as long as they get their cut. Hopefully the City finally grabs a pair and stands up to them. The taxpayers took it in the ear the last deal.

If all the “Hot air” from the blowhards on this site could be directed towards the catch basins, then I guess they would be melted out and running free… Simple fact is that the CITY is cutting back services to save money, in my opinion this is to fund “frills and wants” more than anything. Anyone with contacts within the work crews can tell you that there are not enough people now to do the work. SO, if you want to blow hot air, do so at the Mayor and management of the CITY not the workers. They are just out there doing as they are instructed to.
To those who would point the finger at their wages don’t read much do you? Take a long look at the SOFI report. The majority of the money goes to the management, and their contractor “acquaintences”. These are the ones who also direct the crews who do the work. Cry me a river about the unions, if you want a good job, good benefits and maybe a good pension…you probably need to be in a union.
My family carries union cards from IWA, USW and the BCNU. We stand behind all of our union brothers and sisters like they are our own family.. WHO STANDS FOR YOU ??
