Northern Man Dies In Sledding Accident

Saturday, January 4, 2014 @ 5:03 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Watson Lake RCMP have recovered the body of a 43 year old man from Lower Post, BC after he was reported missing on Thursday.

Family and friends reported the man missing after they hadn’t heard from him.  He was last seen leaving a New Years Eve fireworks celebration in Lower Post on his snowmobile on January 1st.  Friends searched for him after he failed to return home.  Temperatures in the Lower Post area on the B.C.-Yukon border have been in the minus 20’s recently.

On Thursday police were notified and immediately organized a search crew.  With the assistance of numerous community members and a helicopter, a ground and aerial search of the area was conducted at first light.  Then yesterday the man’s body and snowmobile were located only a short distance from his residence. It appears he drove off the road, hit a snowbank and was thrown over an embankment. His body was found on the bank of the partially frozen Liard River. Speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors.

As there is no foul play involved in this incident, the BC Coroner Service has taken jurisdiction.
