Cougars Blast the Blazers 9-5.

Friday, January 3, 2014 @ 10:22 PM

The Prince George Cougars kicked off 2014 with a bang on Friday night on home ice. Todd Fiddler and Klarc Wilson each had hat tricks and six Cougars had multi-point games en route to a 9-5 victory over Kamloops.

The Cougars opened the scoring just 2:18 into the first when Jordan Tkatch, Tyler Mrkonjic and Troy Bourke combined on a tic-tac-toe passing play. Tkatch, who was named Hubbell Designer Goldsmith's Player of the Month for December before the game, kept a puck in along the right wing wall, fed a pass down low to Mrkonjic who then centered for Troy Bourke who knocked in his 14th of the season.

90 seconds later Kamloops responded with a goal of their own when Aspen Sterzer banged home a rebound off the stick of Eric Krienke. For Sterzer, it was his 17th goal of the season.

The next five minutes belonged to the Cougars who would strike for four unanswered goals. First it was Todd Fiddler who roofed one in over the shoulder of Taran Kozun off a two-on-one.

Just over two minutes later, Zach Pochiro was hauled down on a breakaway and was subsequently rewarded with a penalty shot. He skated slowly up the middle of the ice and beat Taran Kozun with a quick wrist shot to the stick side to make it 3-1.

Klarc Wilson made it 4-1 off a scramble in front of the net, and Fiddler upped the lead to 5-1 with a shorthanded marker, which ended Taran Kozun's night in goal. Bolton Pouliot replaced Kozun and kept the score the same for the remainder of the first period.

Klarc Wilson notched his second of the game at the 4:51 mark on a power play, and then completed his hat trick at the 12:16 mark of the second off a nifty pass from Todd Fiddler off a faceoff. For Wilson it was his first career WHL hat trick, and his 14th goal of the season.

Kamloops would then answer with two quick goals in the later stages of the second. First it was Joe Kornelson who tapped home a rebound off a power play. Josh Connolly then followed up less than a minute later with a goal off a two-on-one. Despite the late period collapse, the Cougars took a 7-3 lead into the intermission and were outshooting Kamloops 33-17.

Joe Kornelson drew the Blazers back within three just over a minute into the third with another power play tally, and it looked as though the Blazers had found some life. That would be as close as they would get though, as Jordan Tkatch helped restore the Cougars four goal lead with a power play marker at 14:41 of the third thanks to a beautiful pass from behind the net from Troy Bourke.

Ryan Rehill and Todd Fiddler traded goals in the final minutes to wrap up the game at a 9-5 final. For Fiddler it was his third hat trick of the season, and second against Kamloops. In two games against the Blazers this season with Prince George, Todd Fiddler has six goals and 10 points.

Both teams scored twice on the power play. Kamloops finished two-for-four while the Cougars went two-for-six. The final shot total was 45-24 for the Cougars who improve their record to 15-21-2-3. They remain five points outside of eighth thanks to Tri-City's win against Portland.

The Cougars and Blazers will square off in the rematch tomorrow night at the CN Centre.

Lets put this game in perspective–Kamloops is below us in the standings, the game was not a “barn burner”with respect to speed where our conditioning is usually lacking in the 3rd period, the save percentage for both teams was .800 average BUT after Kamloops replaced their goalie he allowed 4 goals on 30 shots and Edmonds allowed 4 goals on approximately 15 shots!!Forsberg must be playing for a trade–he was the only cougar forward to have a plus/minus of -1 tonite…Six of our goals were scored by 2 of our 20 year olds..SO while am glad for the win, strong play by one line compensated for our weak goaltending.
