BC Hydro Making Progess on Power Outages
Prince George, B.C. – B.C. Hydro is working to restore power to approximately 400 customers in the Prince George region and hopes to have the job completed by 8 tonight.
There are various spot outages in the area caused by ice and snow on power lines, along with lines that have been brought down by falling trees. Areas affected include the 31200 block of the Hart Highway, Ferguson Lake Road, Spiritwood Road, Chief Lake, Reid Lake and Vivian Lake Roads. About 70 customers in the Ness Lake area still have no power, the same for 37 locations on Tallus Road.
Power is yet to be restored to 28 customers north of Kelly Road, and to sites on Michell Road and Highway 16 east. Again Hydro hopes to have all of the above locations fully restored by 8pm.
However, as they head toward the 48-hour mark in the dark, 73 customers in the vicinity of Sinclair Mills have been told that it will be 4pm Saturday before their service is restored.

Uh, is there a glaring problem here or am I dreaming? When do they cut the tree line back, every 20 years???
I don’t buy the snow storm/ tree down BS either. Isn’t it about time they tell us the real reason for the dozen or so power outages already in the last two months? And for this lovely service they want to raise the rates how much??
“And for this lovely service they want to raise the rates how much??”
Repair crews on overtime aren’t free!
Some of the lines are coming down because of the weight of the snow hanging on the line itself, not just trees falling. But I know a conspiracy theory to create little outtages and sell the power to the south sounds so much more exciting ;)
Welcome to the “cons” of privatization and contracting out. Years ago when BC Hydro had all of their own crews, the line crews filled in the slow times with actual “line maintenance” which included tree pruning, pole replacement, insulator upgrades etc. Now with the push towards using contractors instead of regular crews, these “slow time” jobs are now piled high as work orders and contracted out when the pile gets too high. The thinking is that this saves money… BUT when circumstances get like this, it leads to poor delivery of services which become quite apparent to the masses. Look at the past: BC hydro, Ministry of Highways, BC Gas, BC Tel. All crown corporations who had their own crews and good QUALITY service. Now privatized or contracted out. Poor service, lacking quality control and in the end costs more. Looks good on paper though. Just wait until this hits municipal works, regional district and your local BC Access centre… OOps.. happening as we speak.
I would however like to commend the hard working people who ARE out there doing the repair work, YOU do your best even though the SYSTEM is failing us.. not your fault, thanks for restoring the power.
watchdog nailed it!!!
People ‘want’ first class quality service provided by highly paid people on call 24/7/365 and yet they don’t actually want to pay for it. Hmmmm….
Anyone else see the juxtaposition of comments made by JB?
He constantly complains about the cost of public service, bellyaching over and over again about how we can’t afford increases in wages and benefits⦠then he actually calls HIMSELF out by stating; “People ‘want’ first class quality service provided by highly paid people on call 24/7/365 and yet they don’t actually want to pay for it. Hmmmmâ¦.”
JB, during a debate, you are your own worst enemy⦠LOL
