City Will Respond To New Union Contract Proposal Tuesday

Monday, January 6, 2014 @ 4:59 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Just over a year now since the last contract between the City of Prince George and its municipal workers expired and there is still no sign of a new agreement on the horizon.

However, there is some new activity in the contract dispute.

The negotiating team for CUPE locals 399 and 1048, representing 512 outside and inside workers, has presented a brand new contract proposal to the City.  Local 1048 President Janet Bigelow says that counter proposal was given to the City’s lead negotiator, Vancouver labour lawyer Adriana Wills, yesterday (Sunday).  Bigelow says the City will meet with the union at 10 Tuesday morning to respond to that latest proposal.  Terms of the proposal are not being made public at this time.

The parties had met just before the Christmas holidays but there was no word of anything substantial coming out of those negotiations.  As well, essential service designations still have not been set out.  Both parties are submitting written arguments to a Labour Relations Board representative who will decide which services are essential in this dispute.

I would like to know the total cost up to date what this so called mayor Green has paid to this labour lawyer Adriana Wills

we need a countdown clock to next election… get rid of this arrogant green team

Yeah, why can’t they just sit down together like normal, mature, civilised people, face to face and talk this over? I mean, its no different than someone sitting down and talking to their employer about a raise.

Did Shari sit down and talk with us, the electorate, about the raises she gave herself and the other managers? I think that should absolutely be a prerequisite for the next raise.
Or hey, why not negotiate THAT with the unions???
The city’s position is that they always don’t have the kind of money the unions are talking about for raises but its funny, that isn’t even a consideration when they want a raise!

To all the people,, that gave me the finger, and laid on their horns, Im the guy in the wheelchair,, I need food too. most side walks are not passable for me. So I was on the street, ( which was not that much better).
To the city workers,, You want better job security,, we want better work done.

The lawyer will be quaking in her boots after the union showed how serious they are by staging a strike on a day when 95% of the union members were off. Maybe they went on strike from striking because those in Quesnel or Dawson Creek get more strike pay.

?? WTF..take a look about..they no how to take the puppies for a walk!

Heard the city newest offer is 0.25%.

The union should settle for 2 years at 0 and then stick it to the city in 2015 when hopefully a new mayor and councillors are vying for photo opportunities during the winter games.

Resident: “The union should settle for 2 years at 0 and then stick it to the city “

Don’t you mean, ‘stick it to the taxpayer’? That is where the City gets the money from, in case you weren’t aware.

Mayor Green and her new manager should take a walk in the park and then run for the hills. Spending 160,000 and counting on lawyer to negotiate a strike. City streets bad no shit, employees take direction from staff and mayor so buck stops with them just playing games at our cost.

With mayor Green its always about the percentage, but never about the process. Thinking about process requires an actual intelligent debate. Its much easier to hire an accounting firm at $350,000 and then hide behind their recommendations, then to do what she was actually elected to do.

IMO we need to find out how we can get better services without paying overtime. That should be the issue with the unions… finding out ways to make the workforce more flexible for scheduling and providing them with the equipment they need to do the job.

Maybe some workers need to work Sat-Wed, or Sun-Thur shifts, or maybe we need more on call employees and less ‘full-time’ employees?

steph: “employees take direction from staff and mayor so buck stops with them just playing games at our cost.”

So the workers aren’t accountable for anything? They just do what they’re told? If that’s the case, then they are definitely way overpaid.

Eagle, didn’t the mayor just say we are on track to save millions from the core review? I thought I heard her say some crazy number that made no sense on CKPG…maybe have to look back for that one

A desperate attempt at more cash grabs every time I hear a news release coming from City Hall.

There will be costs and consequences for their decisions. Time will tell how everyone feels about the current leadership and their tactics.

I am not impressed.

JB…Don’t you mean, ‘stick it to the taxpayer’? That is where the City gets the money from, in case you weren’t aware.’

Where does the money come from that you would be paid if your pet projects like Site C are built?

Dragon: “Where does the money come from that you would be paid if your pet projects like Site C are built?”

I wonder if this kind of talk was around when the WAC Bennett dam was built. Good thing we didn’t listen to the naysayers back then. Also, I do not work for BC Hydro.

“So the workers aren’t accountable for anything? They just do what they’re told? If that’s the case, then they are definitely way overpaid.”

Wow….you REALLY must have been screwed over at some point by the City to have such a blind devotion to slagging the workers at EVERY opportunity middlefinger!

Hey CrysBaron, idiot, tool. Do you see my name on the quote you just posted ?

Your rage is blinding you. Fool !

Oh sorry…I got my Morons confused, it was your Equally dimwitted pal Johnnybelt, my most humble apologies :)

Bad day at the sawmill CrysBoron. Mom won’t let you kick the dog ?

I think I’ve figured it out. CrysBoron’s Mom is employed by the city. Li’ CB’s Mom said if she doen’t get a pay increase then Lil’CB won’t get an allowance increase. If Lil’ CB doesn’t get that Ken & Barbie game there is going to be one heck of a tantrum.

Eagleone your making too much sense. This is yell bitch and complain night ;) But seriously that is the path to success that everyone seems to ignore. We need to manage and arrange our teams more effectively. Some team leaders should change to. With different people or attitudes.

“They just do what they’re told? If that’s the case, then they are definitely way overpaid.”

You don’t seem to be aware of what the jobs are all about.

Every union job at the City has a written job description which precisely outlines what the particular job entails. An employee hired to do that particular job is expected (whether told to or routinely) to do that particular job that he/she was hired for. Management reserves for itself the right to make decisions, to manage or to mismanage. It tells workers what to do and when to do it. Can’t have everybody cherry picking what they want to do.

And, not to forget, the work ought to be done safely by qualified workers.

I just read the CBC story ( on the right of screen under British Columbia) about the city /CUPE talks. CrysBoron’s Mom is taking a beating on that comment board.

You’re going to have to do better than personal attacks, Crysbaron. But then again, I don’t expect much from you. Carry on.

I see there’s a few defending the lack of accountability by the workers. No wonder the City is in such bad shape.
