Speed Limits and Winter Tires Up for Discussion
Prince George, B.C.- Tomorrow, the Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review will hold a regional forum in Prince George, a forum aimed at gathering your thoughts on possible changes to speed limits in the Province.
The review is looking at speed limits on longer stretches of rural highways, but there are a couple of other issues which the review wants to hear about.
First, there is the matter of reducing the risk of wildlife –related crashes. That is a major issue in this part of B.C. where the Wildlife Collision Prevention Program estimates that in the high crash period of October through January, there are one or two collisions with wildlife each day.
Another issue under scrutiny is the use of winter tires. There are some Provinces which have made it a legal requirement to have tires which bear a “snowflake” on the vehicle by a certain date. That is not the case in B.C., at least not yet.
The Prince George forum is set for tomorrow evening from 5-8 pm at the Ramada Hotel.
The Rural Highway and Speed Review will develop recommendations and a strategy for implementation that will be ready this spring.

While I don’t think winter tires should be mandatory, I certainly think they’re a good idea….especially up in this neck of the woods.
Wildlife collisions and speed are directly related. I think there should be an automatic $200.00 fine for anyone hitting a deer or a moose.
And speed limits are going to slow people down!
Yeah, and if and when the deer or moose hit my truck they should be paying my deductible.

Good grief … get a clue.
I nailed a moose heading up the Hart hill about 250 metres before the Husky station – doing around 70 kph. I was following about 10 cars during the evening rush hour, with a bunch of cars coming into town also from the other direction. Dark & raining heavily so visability was tough – especially with the opposing traffic’s headlights. When the moose decided to run across the road, I was the unlucky winner of the lottery to see which vehicle would nail it. There was no way anyone would have ever seen it in time to brake for it. I didn’t hit the moose so much as the moose hit me – fine him.
“doing around 70 kph” – ” Dark & raining heavily so visability was tough – especially with the opposing traffic’s headlights”
Here is a prime example of doing the speed limit regardless of the conditions. And you blame the moose?
Isn’t the speed limit 60 kph in that area? Not that I agree with Give more’s ridiculous statement but you walked right into that one.
Huh. Agree 100% with you on that.
Lets see truck hits moose, moose is flipped into the air. Second car goes under the moose while moose is in the air, does not hit it. Moose falls out of the air onto third car, passenger in the third car in hospital for two weeks. Third car never saw the moose until it came out of the sky. Give me Moore who pays the fine. Are you from around here?
Give more, have you ever been on the highway at night. I have, the moose DO NOT follow any traffic rule. Why stop at moose and deer why not birds, bug, leafs.
All speed limits should be reduced by 10 km in winter months. Way to many idiots out there.
Way, way too many nannies on here!
oldduc: Yes I have, 2 1/2 million miles class one and about another million miles other driving. Close calls but never hit one.
Speed limits are the MAXIMUM recommended speed for ideal conditions: broad daylight, good visibility, and good road surface.
Anything that varies from ideal should cause the driver to reduce speed accordingly.
Maximum meaning the extreme fastest speed that the roadway was designed for.
Of course that sign is always interpreted as minimum. So when the sign says 60, every one goes 60 plus 10%, because, you know the police will allow that margin of error.
The Hart Highway is 70kmh from the top of the hill I believe until you get to single lane where it changes to 80kmh and 100kmh.
The reason for the 70kmh is why? Why not 80kmh after the Jumbo, I remember they looked at it and decided against raising the limit due to certain factors, but both elementary schools are closed now at either end so why not a revisit? The highway past Domano changes to 80kmh as soon as you pass Walmart underpass but there are still businesses and houses along the highway so why would it not be 70kmh like the Hart?
Nearly got nailed at the yield by Pine Center yesterday, someone was hell bent on merging with my passenger door until I hit the brakes to avoid the accident.

Have to get rid of Y.R.B before the speed limits change it wont matter what kind of tires you have if the roads are not looked after i drive truck and head west and the roads are always better after you get out of prince george area people are dieing i drive 500km a day roads are crap and i dont see one sand truck more frequant runs would do alot
Wow. ..have any of you had the misfortune to have hit a moose. ..I have and I was doing the speed limit and the moose stepped out of the ditch. ..no time to do didly squat. ..no speed would have averted it

Personally I do not want to see the speed limit up to 80 past the Jumbo as mentioned by “slinky”.
There was a kid hit a couple of years ago at the crosswalk by the old school.
If the speed were to go up, this city and province need to put in some pedestrian overpasses so the school kids etc can get across the highway.
Many know what the highway and roads are like on the Hart in the winter…..especially the problems people have trying to get across an intersection due to the snow banks.
How about some money for the crew with the jaws of life?
The rescue team is about to go down the drain if they cannot get support is my understanding?
Give more you where very lucky if that is your experience
Guess what, the school has been closed for years
Wasn’t there a tunnel under the highway at the school?
